EPISODE 249 - BEAT THE DEVIL

-----------Matt's campaign manager, Peter Stanton, was threatened by Craig Ewing into working to make sure Matt loses the election by sabotaging his chances.

-----------After John Ross learned from Bum about Peter working for the Barnes campaign, Matt confronted Peter.  Later, Jeremy Wendell had Peter killed as he was becoming a liability.

------------Krystle underwent tests.

------------John Ross paid a visit to Adam Carrington to get some answers about the car accident in which Heather died that was meant to kill Krystina.

------------Jasmine told Dylan about her pregnancy, and Dylan agreed to marry her.

------------Returning from Denver, John Ross told Bobby, Sue Ellen, Catlin, Krystina, and Christopher that Jeremy Wendell was behind the accident that killed Heather, a revelation Lucas happened to overhear!

Southfork....morning....

 Bobby rides his horse back to the stables at Southfork early in the morning.  Reaching the stables, he climbs down off the animal as a ranch hand comes up to him and takes the horse's reigns.  "Thanks, Tony,"  Bobby says.

 

"Yes, sir, Mr. Ewing,"  Tony replies.  The young hand leads the horse into the stable.  As Bobby begins walking back toward the house, he sees Ann coming out to meet him.  

 

"I woke up and you were gone,"  Ann says, meeting her husband.  "How long have you been out here?"

 

"I got up about six.  I couldn't sleep and I didn't wanna wake you, so I came out here.  I went riding to try and clear my head."

 

"You know you can always talk to me, if you need to."

 

"I know,"  Bobby says.  "This whole things is just so.........so crazy.  And to find out that Jeremy Wendell is behind all of this, I just.........I thought Jeremy Wendell was out of my life years ago, and now, here he is again trying to destroy not only this family, but our company as well."

 

"You're right, it's crazy.  Wendell is, what, in his 90s now?"

 

"Yep."

 

"How does a man that age wield that kind of power?"  Ann asks.

 

"Honey, Jeremy Wendell will probably still be goin' strong when he's 120, unless somebody stops him.  If I didn't know better, I'd swear that man was the devil himself.  Well, I need to go and get a shower and change.  I need to go into town right after breakfast.  I think I need to be at Ewing Oil right now."

 

"Ewing Oil?  Bobby, why?  You're retired, remember?"

 

"I know, but with Wendell out to take control of Ewing Oil, I feel like I need to be there."

 

"You sound like you don't trust Clay to fend off Wendell,"  Ann says.

 

"Clay is a good man, and he's smart and very capable.  But he's young, and inexperienced, and he's no match for Wendell."

 

"Bobby, Sue Ellen is at Ewing Oil, too.  Don't tell me you don't believe she's no match for Jeremy Wendell."

 

"Honey, to be honest with you......no, I don't,"  Bobby replies.  "Sue Ellen is tough, but I don't think even she's a match for Wendell."

 

"And what makes you think that you are?  Because you beat him once before?"

 

"Yes, for one thing.  And for another , maybe none of us are a match for Wendell and his powerful allies alone.  But workin' together.....Sue Ellen, John Ross, Clay, and myself.......we can beat him.  Besides, I have to protect the company and the family.  For me, it's personal.  Jeremy Wendell is responsible for the death of my son's wife and my grandson's mother.  And if it's the last thing I ever do, I wanna personally destroy Jeremy Wendell for that."

 

"Bobby, I.....I have to admit, I'm scared,"  Ann says.  "If Jeremy Wendell is as dangerous as you say, then it terrifies me of what that man will do.  He hates the Ewings, especially you because you had a hand in sendin' him to prison years ago.  Why can't Matt take the information Adam Carrington gave John Ross back to Washington and present it to Congress.  Since this organization Wendell heads up is plannin' on infiltrating the government, then the government should be involved in this."

 

"Honey, we have to have proof before Matt can do that, and Wendell and his cronies haven't left a paper trail.  All we have right now is Adam Carrington's word, and I'm afraid that won't mean much without some kind of tangible proof."  Bobby puts his hands on his wife's shoulders.  "Annie, I don't want you to worry about this."

 

"Don't worry?  You're about to do battle with Satan himself, and you're tellin' me not to worry?"

 

"Y'know, when we stand together, us Ewings are a pretty formidable bunch.  And Jeremy Wendell and Craig Ewing are about to find out just HOW formidable."  Bobby kisses Ann on the forehead, then walks away from her and heads toward the house.  Ann watches her husband as he walks away from her, worried about where this is all going to lead.

Murray Women's Prison, Gatesville, Texas....

 Katherine Wentworth is in line with several other inmates returning to her cell at prison that morning after breakfast when a female guard approaches her.  "Wentworth, come with me,"  the guard says.

 

"Come where?"  Katherine asks.

 

"You have a visitor."

 

"A visitor?  This early in the morning?"

 

"Just come with me,"  the guard says.

 

Curious who her mystery visitor is, Katherine gets out of line and follows the female guard down a hallway.  A moment later, Katherine is led into a small and drab visitor's room.  

 

"Have a seat,"  the guard tells her.

 

Reluctantly, Katherine takes a seat at the table as the guard leaves the room.  A few seconds later, the door opens, and Katherine is stunned when she sees a familiar figure walk into the room.  

 

"Hello, Katherine,"  Jeremy Wendell says.

 

"Well, well.  Jeremy.  I never thought I'd see your face again."

 

"I always like to keep in contact with old friends.  Especially those who can be useful to me."

 

"Useful to you?"  Katherine asks.  "How in the world could I possibly be useful to you, stuck in here?"

"Katherine, you're probably the only person alive who hates the Ewings as much as I do, and wants to see them destroyed as much as I do," says Jeremy.  "And that mutual hatred you have for them makes you extremely useful to me.  And as for you being stuck in this prison.........that won't be for much longer."

 

"What are you talking about?"

 

"At this moment, I'm arranging for you to leave this prison.  Soon, you'll be free."

 

"You have a miracle up your sleeve or something?"  Katherine asks.

 

"No.  But I do have a lot of connections in very high places, one of them  being the warden of this prison.  How do you think I managed to get in here to see you?  I'm arranging for you to be transferred out of this particular prison in a couple of days."

 

"Transferred?  I thought you said I'd be free."

 

"You will be.  During that transfer, you're going to escape.  I have everything arranged.  You do everything according to my plan, and you'll never again have to see the inside of a prison."

 

"Why, Jeremy?  Why are you doing this?  What's in it for you?  Or, I suppose I should ask, what will I have to do in exchange for this.......favor?"

 

Jeremy looks at her for a second.  "What you and I have both wanted for years.  Destroy the Ewings once and for all.  I'm an old man, Katherine.  My own daughter hates me and will have nothing to do with me, and all three of my grandsons are dead, thanks to the Ewings.  I have no one else to leave my empire to, and no one else I can count on to bring the Ewings down, but you.  Help me destroy that family, and then you can disappear to anywhere in the world.  Now do we have a deal?"

 

Katherine looks at Jeremy and flashes her familiar, evil smile as she thinks about two of the things she has dreamed of every day since she arrived at prison.......revenge against the Ewings, and her freedom!

Ewing Oil....

 Bobby, Sue Ellen, and Clay are seated in silence at the table in the conference room at Ewing Oil later in the morning.  Bobby impatiently looks at his watch.  A second later, John Ross enters the room.  "Well, mornin' y'all,"  he says.

 

"You might at least have been on time,"  Clay says.

 

"Well, since I no longer have a job here at this company my grandfather founded, I do have other things to do.  And since I WAS pushed out of this company, I don't even know why I'm here."

 

"That makes two of us," says Clay.

 

"Alright, you two, just settle down,"  Bobby says.

 

"Okay, Uncle Bobby, now that we're all here, would you mind telling us why you called this meeting?"  Clay asks.

 

"Of course.  Each of us here has a share of this company, and that's why I wanted to have this meeting to discuss this threat facing us in the person of Jeremy Wendell.  Now the information we have so far is correct, this shadowy organization Wendell controls is hell bent on taking over Ewing Oil, and we can't let that happen."

 

"I completely agree, Bobby,"  Sue Ellen says.

 

"Uncle Bobby, with all due respect, have you decided to come out of retirement because you don't think I'm capable of handling this threat from Wendell?"  Clay asks.

 

"No, Clay, that's not it.  I haven't decided to come out of retirement, but as long as Jeremy Wendell remains a threat to this company, and to this family, we all have to work together.  That's why I asked John Ross to be here.  Clay, it's not that I don't think you're capable.  But you haven't dealt with Wendell before. The rest of us have."

 

"Bobby's right,"  Sue Ellen says.  "We DO all have to work together if we have any hope of stopping Wendell"

 

"John Ross?  Clay?  Are the two of you willing to put aside your differences and work together against this family's common enemy?"  Bobby asks.

 

Clay looks across the table at John Ross.  "Of course,"  he says.

 

John Ross returns Clay's gaze, and instead of speaking, he nods affirmatively.  

 

"Good,"  says Bobby.  

 

"Bobby, what do you have in mind?"  Sue Ellen asks.  

 

"For the foreseeable future, every business deal that comes into this office is gonna have to be thoroughly checked out before any contracts are signed........or any verbal agreements are made, and I don't care who the deal is with.  After all, Wendell and Craig Ewing used Adam Carrington, John Ross's own brother-in-law, to set him up with that phony offshore deal in California.  We can't allow anything like that to happen again."

 

"I think you're absolutely right, Uncle  Bobby,"  says Clay.  "I have a few deals in the works."

 

"Alright, can you get a list of names of everyone you've done business with or even had meetings with?"

 

"Of course.  I'll have Sly get a list together of all my appointments since I took over as company president."

 

"No, we need to go back further than that,"  Bobby says.  "Have Sly and Sally put together a list of everyone you've done any business with since the contest between you and John Ross began, and we need that ASAP.  I'll call Bum, and as soon as you get some names together, I'll have Bum do some checking.  John Ross, I'll also need a list of everyone you did business with during the contest."

 

"I think I can manage that,"  John Ross says with a nod.  

 

"And, Sue Ellen....."

 

"I'll have Sally get a list of everyone I've had meetings with too,"  Sue Ellen says, interrupting Bobby.

 

"Fine,"  Bobby says with a slight smile.  "Working together, we'll beat Wendell.  But we have to be aware of what we're up against.  And we're also gonna need some help.  That's why I've asked Matt Culver to talk to some of his colleagues in Washington, especially in the Senate.  Maybe they can launch some sort of investigation into Wendell and any of his associates who might also be involved in this organization."

 

"Do we really have time for all that?"  John Ross asks.  "You know how damned slow those Senate or House investigations can be and how much time they can take.  While we're waitin' to hear somethin' from Washington, Jeremy Wendell and Craig Ewing can be already launched a hostile takeover of Ewing Oil and takin' control of this company."

 

"I think John Ross is right,"  Sue Ellen says.  "I don't think we have time to wait for a Senate investigation."

 

"Alright, then we come up with another plan,"  says Bobby. "I'll still talk to Matt and see what he can do."

 

"In the meantime, we're faced with another problem," John Ross says.

 

"Which is?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Brad Barnes.  He's still runnin' for Senate against Matt Culver, and, even with Peter Stanton out of the  way, you can bet Wendell and Craig Ewing have a back up plan and will pull out all the stops to get him elected."

 

"Barnes has to have an Achilles heal,"  says Clay.

 

"I'm workin' on that,"  John Ross says.  "I've got Bum diggin' DEEP into Barnes's past, as well as the past of his mother, Marilee Stone."

 

Bobby looks at his nephew curiously.  "Marilee?  Why are you having Bum investigate her?"

 

"Because she's Barnes's mother, Uncle Bobby.  Maybe there's somethin' in her past we can use against her son."

 

"Marilee has led a colorful life, but I don't think you're gonna find any major skeletons in her closet, John Ross,"  Bobby says.

 

"Well, you know what my father use to say, Uncle Bobby.  If you can't find a skeleton in someone's closet.......then put one there."

 

Bobby looks at John Ross, realizing that playing by J.R.'s rules might be the only way to defeat Wendell, Barnes, and his cousin Craig Ewing.

Brad Barnes Campaign Headquarters....afternoon....

 Pamela comes into Brad's campaign headquarters early that afternoon and finds the place a flurry of activity, with several campaign workers on the phone, apparently with the press, while others were frantically stuffing envelopes or printing out campaign fliers.  Pamela looks around and sees Brad across the room, talking on his phone.  She approaches him.

 

"No, look, I've already told you people I have no comment," Brad says to the person he's on the phone with.  "No, I'm  not going to comment on that.  Good day."  Brad angrily ends the call and tosses his phone onto a desk next to him.  

 

"Brad, is something wrong?"  Pamela asks.

 

"Yes, something's wrong.  Matt Culver's campaign manager was found dead from a gunshot wound and these phones around here haven't stopped ringing.  Reporters from every newspaper and every TV network on the planet wanting a statement."

 

"I heard about that on the news,"  Pamela says.  "Such a tragedy.  The news said Stanton's body was found in the river."

 

"Yeah.  Anyway, I'm sorry, what brings you down here?"

 

"Just came to see how the campaign was going."

 

"Still behind in the polls,"  Brad says, pacing back and forth nervously.  

 

"How far behind?"  Pamela asks.

 

"Oh, 4 or 5 points."

 

"Well, that's not bad.  You can still catch up.  Besides, polls don't really mean that much, anyway."

 

"Yeah, I know,"  Brad says.  

 

Pamela looks at her brother curiously.  "There's something else bothering you.  What is it?"

 

"I'm sorry, what?"

 

 

"Brad, talk to me.  What's really going on?  This mood of yours is about more than being a few points behind in some stupid poll."

 

"Pamela, I'm fine.  I just have a lot on my mind with this campaign and everything."


"You're sure that's all?"  Pamela asks.

 

"I'm sure.  I really appreciate your  concern, but I'll be fine once this election is over."

 

Pamela nods.  "Alright.  Listen, if you need anything, you  call me.  We might not have grown up together, but you're still my brother, and I love you."

 

Brad manages a slight smile and embraces Pamela.  "I love you, too.  And thanks."

 

Pamela looks at her brother and smiles.  Then she starts to leave.

 

"Pamela?"  Brad says.

 

She turns back to face him.

 

"Thanks for coming by.  We'll get together and have lunch soon, when all this is over."

 

Pamela smiles and nods, then leaves.  After she's gone, Brad runs his hand through his hair and sighs deeply as he sees a newspaper laying on a nearby desk with the headline about Peter Stanton's murder.  

 

"Mr. Barnes?"  A young campaign worker calls out to him from several feet away.  At first, Brad is so preoccupied, he doesn't hear the young man.  "Excuse me, Mr. Barnes?"

 

"Yes?"

 

"The president of the Rotary Club is on the phone," the young man says.  "He wants to confirm that you're going to be speaking at their monthly luncheon tomorrow afternoon."

 

"Oh, umm, tell him, yes.  I'll be there,"   Brad says.

 

"Yes, sir,"  the young man says.  "Oh, and I need you to take a look at the schedule for the rest of the week."

 

"Okay, fine.  I'll, uh, I'll look at the schedule later.  I'll be back later."

 

"Yes, sir, Mr. Barnes,"  the young man says.  He returns to his phone call with the Rotary Club president as Brad grabs his jacket and quickly rushes out.

Jeremy Wendell's apartment....a short time later....

 Brad steps off the elevator at Jeremy Wendell's combination office and penthouse apartment 20 minutes later.  He walks into a small outer office, where he is greeted by Jeremy's secretary.  "I need to see Mr. Wendell,"  Brad says.

 

"I'm sorry, Mr. Barnes, but Mr. Wendell is in the middle of a very important phone call."

 

"Well, he'll just have to cut that call short, then, won't he?"  Brad angrily says, then he storms into Jeremy's office, where Jeremy is seated at his desk, talking on the phone.

 

"Mr. Barnes, wait!"  The secretary says, following him into the office.

 

Jeremy looks up from his phone call at Brad.  "Barnes, what the hell is this?"

 

"We need to talk."

 

"Mr. Wendell, I'm so sorry,"  the secretary says.  "He just barged in."

 

"That will be all, Sheila,"  Jeremy says.  "Close the door on your way out."

 

Sheila nods, then leaves the room.

 

"I'll have to call you back,"  Jeremy says to the person he's on the phone with.  "Something has come up I have to take care of."  He ends the call and puts his phone down on the desk.  "Barnes, I'd really hoped you would have better manners than your father did, but I see yours are even worse.  This has better be good.  I don't like being interrupted in the middle of an important phone call."

 

"I don't really give a damn what you like or don't like, old man," Brad says.  "Like I said, we need to talk."

 

"And what's so important that it couldn't wait?"

 

"Peter Stanton. Remember him?  Matt Culver's campaign manager who was found floating face down in the Trinity River, dead from multiple gunshot wounds?  Sound familiar?"

 

"Barnes, for your own sake, I suggest you get to the point," Jeremy says, annoyed at the intrusion.  "I have more important things to do than to listen to riddles from you."

 

"Alright, I'll get to the point.  You had Stanton killed, didn't you?"

 

"Why would I want to have Peter Stanton killed?"

 

"Maybe because he refused to do your bidding anymore,"  Brad says.  "Look, Wendell, I agreed to run against Culver for the United States Senate, but I did NOT agree to become partners in a murder."

 

"You agreed to run for the Senate because you were hungry for the power and influence that would come with such a position."

 

"I may be hungry for power, but as I said, I will not a party to a murder."

 

Jeremy stands to face him.  "You'll do exactly as you're told.  You seem to forget that I not only control you.....I OWN you.  I placed you in this race for the Senate.  I can help your political career, or I can destroy it, and you.  It would serve you well to remember that, Barnes.  Peter Stanton forgot.  Don't you make the same mistake."

 

"You threatening me, Wendell?"  Brad asks.

 

"I'm making a promise..........do as you're told, and you could very well end up in the White House one day.  Step out of line and I can promise you won't get off as easy as Peter Stanton did.  Instead of ending up dead, your life will be dismantled,  bit by bit.  I'll make you wish you had met the same fate as Stanton.  Now get the hell out of here."

 

Brad angrily stares at Jeremy for a moment.  "One of these days, Wendell, somebody's gonna take you out, and I hope to God I'm there to see it.,"  he says, then he walks out of the room.  

 

Jeremy picks up his phone and dials someone's number.  "It's me,"  he says when the other person answers.  "Bradley Barnes is becoming a problem.  We're going to have to keep a tighter leash on him, and use our backup plan if he continues to step out of line.  But we cannot afford to lose this Senate race."

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....late afternoon...

 Krystina, John Ross, and Krystina's sister Fallon Colby are sitting with Krystle in Krystle's room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital that afternoon when there is a knock at the door.  "Come in,"  Krystina says.  Mitch and another  doctor walk into the room.

 

"Hello, Krystina,"  Mitch says.  "John Ross."

 

"Mitch,"  says Krystina.  "This is my sister, Fallon Colby."

 

"Mrs. Colby, it's a pleasure,"  Mitch says, shaking Fallon's hand.  "This is a colleague of mine, Dr. Frank Burgamy.  He's head of neurology here at the hospital, and he's one of the best neurosurgeons in the country."

 

"Doctor, do you have the results of my tests?"  Krystle asks.

 

"Yes, Mrs. Carrington, we do,"  Mitch replies.

 

"And?  Please, tell me.  What's wrong with me?  Is it Alzheimer's?"

 

"No, Mrs. Carrington,"  replies Mitch.  "Our tests show no signs of Alzheimer's or Dementia."

 

"Thank God,"  Krystina says, breathing a sigh of relief.  

 

"Then what has been causing Krystle's memory lapses and blackouts?"  Fallon asks.

 

"I'll let Dr. Burgamy discuss that with you," says Mitch.  

 

"Mrs. Carrington, I've examined all of your tests that Dr. Cooper ordered, and I've examined your medical records from Denver.  We found a tumor located on the front right lobe of your  brain that's pressing on the area of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex, whiich controls memory and cognitive function."

 

"A tumor?"  Krystina asks, near tears.  "A brain tumor?  Oh dear God."

 

"Mrs. Carrington, according to your records your doctor in Denver faxed to us, you had a tumor in this same area of your brain back in 1988."

 

"Yes, that's right,"  says Krystle.  "I had to undergo a very dangerous operation to remove the tumor, and after the surgery, I spent more than two years in a coma."

 

"Doctor, are you saying that, the tumor that my mother had in 1988, has come back?  After almost 35 years?"

 

"It's possible, Mrs. Ewing, in the same way breast cancer or any other form of cancer can reoccur many years after the initial diagnosis."

 

"A tumor,"  Krystle says.  "All this time......all these memory lapses and moments I wasn't even able to remember.  All the times I came out of a blackout and found myself in a strange place and I couldn't even remember how I got there.......I was so terrified that I had Alzheimer's or some form of Dementia.  I never even considered the possibility of something like this."

 

"Alright, so now that we know what's been causin' Krystle's problems, what can you do about it?" John Ross asks.

 

Krystle looks at the doctor.  "Surgery?"

 

"Mrs. Carrington, at this point, we have two options.  Surgery is one option, but, I won't lie to you.  This is an extremely risky operation, especially for someone your age."

 

"What are the other  options?"  Krystina asks.

 

"I'm afraid that, the only other option is to do nothing.  From looking at the MRI, the tumor appears to be benign due to its size and shape.  And because of its location, radiation is not likely to work.  Even if it did reduce the size of the tumor, the radiation could damage surrounding tissue, causing even further and more rapid cognitive decline, as well as possible blindness."

 

"You said my other option is to do nothing?"  Krystle asks.  "What happens if we do nothing?  I just continue to get worse until my memory is gone completely?"

 

The doctor looks at her.  "Yes, I'm afraid so."

 

"Doctor, what are you saying?"  Fallon asks.  "That there's nothing you can do for her?"

 

" Well, as I said, surgery is an option.  But at Mrs. Carrington's age, and given the fact that the tumor is rather large, surgery would be extremely risky, and there's a very high chance that it wouldn't work, that Mrs. Carrington's condition would be even worse after the surgery, or........."

 

"Or......what?"  Krystle asks.

 

"Or, there's a chance you wouldn't survive the operation,"  the doctor continues.  

 

"My God,"  Krystina cries.  John Ross puts his arm around her.  

 

"Doctor, if we do nothing......how long will I have before.........before my mind is completely gone and I don't even recognize my family anymore?"  Krystle asks.

 

"Hard to say.  Could be two to six months.  Could be another year.  But, as the tumor grows in size, it'll put more pressure on the cerebral cortex and your symptoms will get worse over time."

 

"Two to six months," Krystle says.  "So what you're telling me is that, in a few months I won't even be able to recognize my own grandchildren, or even know my own name."

 

Dr. Burgamy hesitates a moment before answering.  "I'm afraid so, Mrs. Carrington.  There's just no easier way to give this kind of news."

 

"How soon can you schedule the surgery?"  Krystle asks.

 

"Mom, no!"  Krystina says.  "You heard what the doctor said.  The surgery is dangerous."

 

"Yes, Krystina, I heard what he said.  I could die from the surgery, or end up worse than I am now.  But without this surgery.......if I do nothing and just sit back and wait.......then I'll end up worse than I am now anyway."

 

"Dr. Burgamy, what are the chances that an operation could be successful?"  Fallon asks.

 

"Given Mrs. Carrington's age and the size of the tumor........ten percent at best."

 

"Doctor.......I want you to schedule the surgery,"  says Krystle.

 

"Mom, no,"  Krystina says in tears, going over to her mother.  "You could die."

 

"Krystina, without this surgery........in a few months, I might as well be dead.  If I lose the ability to recognize you, or ,my grandchildren; if I have to be cared for constantly, and I won't even know where I am.......what kind of life is that?  Darling, it's not the kind of life I want.  Even if there is only a ten percent chance that this surgery will be successful, I have to take it.  Ten percent is better than no chance at all."

 

"Krystina, your Mama's right,"  John Ross says.  "Even a small chance is worth takin'."

 

Krystina looks at John Ross, then at Krystle, and at Burgamy.  "Doctor, if this were you in this situation, what would you do?  Would you risk the surgery? Or would you choose to enjoy the time you had left with your family?"

 

Dr. Burgamy looks at Krystina.  "I can't make that decision for your mother."

 

"Please.  I want to know.  What would you do?"

 

"If it were me......I'd have the surgery."

 

Krystina lowers her head.  After a few seconds she looks at her mother.  "Okay, Mom.  I won't object anymore.  I understand why you want to do this."

 

"How soon can you schedule the surgery?"  Krystle asks.

 

"Tomorrow morning."

 

"That soon?"  Krystina asks.

 

"The sooner we get your mother into surgery, the better her chances, Mrs. Ewing."

 

Kystina takes a seat on the bed beside her mother and embraces her as John Ross, Fallon, Mitch, and Dr. Burgamy look on.

Southfork....that night....

 

Lucas is sitting on his bed drinking a glass of bourbon.  He finishes off the glass and pours himself another.  He takes a sip as a knock comes at the door.  In a drunken haze, Lucas ignores the knock and finishes off his glass of bourbon.  He pours yet another glass.  Michael comes into the room.  "Dad?"  The boy says.

 

"Yeah, Michael, what do you want?"  Lucas asks, his speech slurred.

 

"Logan was asking for you,"  Michael says.  "He wants you to read him a story.  The one Mom use to read him."

 

"Umm, why don't you do it?"

 

"Because he asked for YOU."

 

"I can't.  Just.......just tell him I'm in bed, not feeling well."


 

"I've been telling him that every night,"  Michael says.  "And then he asks me what's wrong with Daddy.  When he asks me that, I don't have a clue what to tell him.  I sure can't tell him the truth, that you're too drunk to  be a father these days.  He's a little kid, but he's not stupid, and he's eventually gonna figure out you're not really sick."

 

"Michael, I'm not in the mood for this crap tonight,"  Lucas says.

 

"You're never in the mood for anything but that stupid bottle.  Well, fine!  I'll read Logan his story while you stay in here and drink yourself to sleep like always.  I wonder what Mom would think if she could see you now."

 

Lucas looks at his son.  "Don't you dare mention your mother to me,"  he says, getting off the bed and struggling to stand on his feet.  

 

"I'll mention Mom any time I feel like it."

 

"You can't talk to me like that.  Don't......don't forget who's the parent and who's the child here.....," Lucas says, staggering as he walks toward Michael.

 

"Parent?  You're not my parent,"  Michael angrily says.  "You're nothing  but a drunken loser and you stink.  I can't stand the sight of you."  Michael turns and starts to leave.

 

"Hey, you wait just a damn minute here,"  Lucas says, grabbing his son by the arm.  Michael forcefully pulls out of his father's grip, causing Lucas to lose his balance and fall to the floor.

 

Tears begin falling down the teenager's face as Michael watches Lucas struggle to get back up.  Disgusted and a little afraid of his father in his drunken condition, Michael quickly runs out of the room, closing the door behind him.  As Michael is heading down the stairs in tears, he runs into Christopher, who stops him.

 

"Hey, whoa whoa,"   Christopher says.  "Michael, what's wrong?"

 

"Nothing."

 

"Come on, I can tell something's wrong.  Is it your father?"

 

Michael looks at Christopher, crying.  "He's not my father.  I hate him."

 

"Wait a second, now, you can't mean that."

 

"I DO mean it!  He acts like he's the only one hurting.  My Mom died!  But I didn't just lose my Mom, I lost my Dad, too, because that drunk upstairs is NOT my Dad!"   The boy pushes past Christopher and runs down the stairs.

 

"MICHAEL!"  Christopher calls to him, but the boy ignores him and continues on.  Christopher looks up the stairs toward Lucas's bedroom.  After a brief pause, he proceeds up the stairs and down the hall to Lucas's room.  He pauses again outside the bedroom door, then walks in to find Lucas passed out on the floor beside the bed.  Christopher shakes his head, then he walks over and grabs Lucas.  He picks his brother up and places Lucas on the bed.  Christopher looks down at Lucas in both anger and pity.  Grabbing a blanket from a chair, he tosses it onto Lucas to cover him, and then walks out of the room, turning off the light and closing the door behind him.

 

 Meanwhile, Bobby and Ann are sitting  in the living room, a cozy fire burning in the fireplace, Bobby looking over some feed bills for the ranch while Ann is reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.  After a moment, Ann puts down her book.  "How about a cup of hot chocolate?"  She asks.

 

Bobby looks at his wife and smiles.  "I'd love a cup."

 

As Ann is about to get up from her seat on the sofa, Christopher comes into the room.  "Dad, we need

to talk,"  he says.

 

Bobby and Ann exchange worried looks.  "Alright,"  Bobby says.  

 

Christopher walks over and takes a seat beside Ann.

 

"What's on your mind?"  Bobby asks.

 

"I'm really worried about Lucas.  Dad, we have to do something.  I just ran into Michael, LITERALLY, as he was running down the stairs in tears because of Lucas's drinking.  I went up to talk to Lucas, and I found him passed out drunk on the floor of his bedroom.  I had to pick him up and put him to bed."

 

"I've been very worried about Lucas, myself,"  says Ann.  

 

"Dad, we have to do something," Christopher says.  "He's drinking himself to death since Heather died, and he's pushing Michael away. That kid's hurting really deeply, and it's like Lucas is so wrapped up in his own grief that he doesn't even notice or care what Michael's going through."

 

"And poor Logan,"  says Ann.  "He's young, but he knows somethin's really wrong."

 

"I know you're both right,"  Bobby says.  "I just kept hoping that Lucas would eventually pull himself together once he had time to grieve.  But I can't keep buryin' my head in the sand and  hopin' this problem will go away on its own."

 

"Okay, so what are we gonna do?" Christopher asks.

 

"I'm gonna go up and talk to him."

 

"It won't do any good right now,"  Christopher says.  "He's out cold.  He'll probably sleep through the night."

 

Bobby sighs.  "First thing in the morning, I'll call Jenna.  We'll sit down and try and figure out the best way to handle this."

 

Ann and Christopher exchange looks.

John Ross and Krystina's bedroom....

Krystina is sitting on the bed in hers and John Ross's bedroom, staring at a photo of herself and 

Krystle when Krystina was a little girl.  She gently touches the photo, a tear falling down her cheek.  As she looks at the picture, her mind travels back in time to a day many years ago, when she was a little girl......

John Ross comes in from the bathroom, snapping Krystina out of her memory and back to the present.  He walks over to the bed and looks down at the photo Krystina holds in her hand.  "I always loved that picture of you and your Mama," he says.

 

"It's my favorite of us.  I was just thinking about when I was a little girl.  John Ross, I'm so afraid.  You heard what Dr. Burgamy said.  There's a less than ten percent chance of this surgery being successful.  And at my Mom's age."

 

"Hey, now you listen to me.  Krystle's gonna be just fine.  You have to believe that."

 

"I'm trying,"  Krystina says.  "I know that one day I'm gonna lose her.  That's something that children of aging parents always have to prepare for.  But John Ross........I'm not ready to lose my Mom yet.  I'm just not."  Krystina begins to cry.

 

"I know, darlin',"  John Ross says, sitting down beside her on the bed.  "I know."  John Ross puts his arms around Krystina and embraces her as she cries.

Southfork....the next morning....

 Bobby and Ann are having breakfast in the dining room the next morning.  Maria, the maid, pours Ann a cup of coffee.  "Thank you, Maria."

 

"You're welcome, Mrs. Ewing.  Can I get you anything else?"

 

"No, thank you, I'm fine."

 

Maria smiles, and goes into the kitchen.  

 

"Honey, as soon as Jenna and I talk to Lucas, I'll try and come on over to the hospital,"  Bobby says.

 

"Alright,"  Ann replies, taking a sip of her coffee.  "I just hope that you and Jenna can get through to Lucas."

 

"So do I. I never should've let this go on for so long."

 

"Don't blame yourself,"  Ann says as Michael and Alex come down the stairs.  While Alex comes into the dining room, Michael goes the opposite direction and walks out the front door of the house.  

 

"Morning,"  Alex says.

 

"Morning, Alex,"  Bobby replies.  " Michael didn't want any breakfast?"

 

"I guess not.  He was real quiet this morning.  I asked him what was wrong, but he just ignored me."

 

"I think I'll go talk to him,"  Bobby says.  He gets up from the table and leaves the room.  

 

"Are you going to the hospital this morning?"  Alex asks Ann after Bobby has left.

 

"Yeah, I am.  Krystina could use all the support she can get right now."

 

"I know,"  says Alex.  "I'll try and come by after class."

 

Meanwhile, Bobby finds Michael standing in the driveway waiting for the morning school bus.  "You want me to drive you to school?"  Bobby asks.

 

"No, thanks.  The bus is on its  way."

 

"I thought the drive would give us a chance to talk,"  Bobby says.  "Michael, do you wanna talk about what's been going on with your father?"

 

"No, Grandpa.  I don't wanna talk about him."

 

"Everything is gonna be alright, Michael.  I promise."

 

"How, Grandpa?"  Michael asks.  "How's everything gonna be alright.  Mom's dead, and my Dad is a hopeless drunk who doesn't even know or seem to care that I'm even alive!"

 

"Michael, your Grandma Jenna is coming over this morning, and we're gonna talk about what we can do to help your father, and you and your brother, through this.  We're gonna do whatever it takes to help Lucas overcome his problem with drinking."

 

The school bus pulls into the drive way and comes to a stop in front of where Michael is standing.  "I gotta go, Grandpa,"  Michael says.

 

"Alright.  Have a nice day.  You want Ann or I to pick you up this afternoon?"

 

"No, thanks.  I'm going over to Jamal's house after school to work on a project,"  Michael says.  He gets on the bus, and the doors close. 

 

Deeply worried about his grandson, Bobby watches sadly as the bus turns around and drives away.   

 

As the school bus makes its way down the long, tree-lined drive, Jenna's car turns into the front gate and passes the bus, which turns right out of the front gate and heads toward Braddock.  Jenna drives her car up to the house and comes to a stop in front of the mansion where Bobby remains standing.  

 

 

"Hello, Bobby,"  Jenna says, she and Charlie getting out of the car.

 

"Morning, Jenna, Charlie."

 

"Bobby, I hope you don't mind that I tagged along,"  Charlie says.

 

"I told Charlie about Lucas,"  Jenna says.  "She wants to help."

 

"Of course,"  Bobby says, greeting Charlie with a hug.  "Lucas is your brother and he could use all the support he can get right now."

 

"How are the boys?"  Jenna asks.

 

"I think Michael doesn't know which way to turn right now.  He's angry, and he feels all alone.  Thank God Logan is too young to really know what's goin' on."

 

"We should've done something sooner,"  Jenna says.

 

"Yes, we should have,"  says Bobby.  "But we can't dwell on that now.  The important thing is that we help Lucas overcome this drinking problem.  Let's go in."

The Krebbs Ranch....

 

 Ray, Donna, Matt, Margaret, and their kids Ethan and Madison are having breakfast in the Krebbs kitchen that morning.  Donna pours Ray a cup of coffee.  "Thank you,"  he says as she takes a seat at the table beside him.

 

"You're welcome."

 

"What time's Peter's funeral?"  Ray asks.

 

"2 o'clock,"  replies Matt.  

 

"How was Peter's wife when you spoke to her last night?"  Donna asks.

 

Matt sighs.  "Not so good.  This is really hard on her and the kids.  I just wish there was something I could do for them."

 

"So do I,"  says Margaret.  "I hope they find the bastard who killed Peter."

 

"They will,"  Ray says.  

 

"Where's Dylan this morning?"  Margaret asks.

 

"Good question,"  Ray says.  "He hasn't been around much the last few days."

 

Donna is about to say something when her cell phone rings.  She picks the phone up and looks at it, then answers the call.  "Hello,"  she says.  "Yes?"  Donna pauses for a moment as she listens to the person on the other end of the line.  "Yes, that will be fine.  Don't worry, Senator Culver will be there.  Yes.  Thank you for calling.  Bye."  Donna ends the call and puts her phone down.  "That was Chuck Stevens with Fox News confirming your appearance on his show this Saturday."

 

"I had forgotten all about that, to be honest, with Peter's death and everything."

 

"I know, but, despite everything going on, you still have an election to win,"  Donna says.  "Brad Barnes is still several points behind in all the polls, but that doesn't mean we can let our guard down. This race could be close."

 

"I don't think Matt has anything to worry about,"  says Ray.  "The voters know who has their best interest at heart.  And they know Matt's a man they can trust."

 

"Voters are unpredictable,"  Donna says.  "And Barnes's campaign seems to have an endless supply of cash.  They've outspent us by more than a hundred thousand dollars so far."

 

Ray is about to say something, when the sound of the front door opening and closing can be heard.  "Must be Dylan,"  Ray says.

 

Dylan and Jasmine come into the kitchen.  "Morning, guys,"  Dylan says.

 

"Mornin',"  Ray says.  "You want any breakfast?"

 

"No, thanks, we stopped and grabbed a couple chicken biscuits on the way over."

 

"Where've you been keeping yourself the last few days?"  Donna asks.

 

"Just.....around.  Umm, Margaret, Matt, you guys remember Jasmine?"

 

"Of course,"  says Margaret.  "Jasmine, how are you?"

 

"Just fine, thanks."

 

"Ray, Donna, we have to talk to you both,"  Dylan says.  

 

"Okay,"  says Ray.  "So talk."

 

"Margaret, maybe we should leave them alone,"  Matt says.

 

"Yeah, maybe so."

 

"No,"  Dylan says.  "You guys can stay.  This is kinda something that concerns the whole family, anyway."

 

Donna sighs.  "Well, this sounds serious."

 

"It is.  Jasmine and I..........I, uh..........I asked Jasmine to marry me, and she said yes."

 

Donna's mouth falls open in shock as she hears the news.  "You did what?"

 

"I asked Jasmine to marry me."

 

"I don't believe this,"  Donna says.  "I just don't believe this."  She gets up from the table and walks over to the couple.  "Dylan, are you OUT of your mind?"

 

"No.  Asking Jasmine to be my wife is the sanest thing I've done in a long time.  I love her."

 

"Dylan, umm, don't you think this is all kinda sudden?"  Asks Ray.

 

"No, it's not sudden at all.  Jasmine and I have been seeing each other for a while.  We're in love, and we wanna get married."

 

"Dylan, you're making a huge mistake if you go through with this,"  Donna says.

 

"And why is that, Donna?"  Jasmine asks.  "Do you think I'm not good enough for Dylan?"

 

"Now, nobody's sayin' that,"  Ray says.

 

"That's EXACTLY what she's saying?"  Jasmine asks.  "Donna, I know you've never liked me.  And I know why.  It's because J.R. Ewing was my grandfather."

 

"J.R. being your grandfather has nothing to do with how I feel about you.  The reason I don't like you is because I don't trust you.  Not after what you did to Dylan before, arranging for him to find Ashley and Conner together......"

 

"What I did?  Ashley is the one who cheated on Dylan with his own brother."

 

"Alright now, that's enough,"  Ray says, getting up from his seat.  

 

 "Damn right it's enough,"  Dylan angrily says.  "Donna, I'm not gonna stand here and listen to you trash talk Jasmine.  I love her, and we're getting married, with or without your blessing."

 

"Well, just answer me one question,"  Donna says.  "And I want an honest answer.  Jasmine is pregnant, isn't she?"

 

Stunned that Donna had guessed the truth, Dylan and Jasmine exchanged looks, then Dylan lowers his head.

 

"Is that true, Dylan?"  Ray asks.

 

"There's no use in lying about it,"  says Donna.  "It's obvious from looking at Jasmine that she's putting on weight."

 

"Well, Dylan?"  Ray says.

 

"Alright, it's true.  Jasmine is pregnant."

 

"Oh, damn it, Dylan,"  says Ray.  

 

"Unbelievable,"  Donna says.  "Just unbelievable."

 "Look, I knew you guys weren't gonna be thrilled with this news, but I thought maybe you'd be at least a little happy for us."

 

"Happy?"  Donna asks.  "You drop this.......this BOMBSHELL on us today of all days, and you expect us to be happy about it?  Dylan, after all that this girl has done......"

 

"She saved my life, Donna,"  Dylan says.  "When I was on my bender, Jasmine took care of me."

 

"She kept you hidden away at a motel for weeks while we had no idea whether you were alive or dead."

 

"Because I didn't want anyone to know where I was.  Donna, if it hadn't been for Jasmine, I might've died."

 

"Well, you don't have to show your gratitude my marrying her."

 

"That's not why I'm marrying her,"  Dylan says.  

 

Ray looks at the young couple.  "You're mind's made up?"

 

"Yes,"  Dylan replies.  

 

"Alright, then,"  Ray says.  "You have my support."

 

"Thank you,"  Dylan says.  He looks at Donna.  "And how about you?  Do I have your support, too?"

 

Donna hesitates a moment before replying.  "I can't stop you from going through with this.  I think you're making a huge mistake.  But I love you, and, I won't stand in your way if this is what you want."

 

Dylan nods, and hugs Donna.  "I love you, too. And it's exactly what I want."

 

"Well, I guess I should congratulate you,"  Margaret says, getting up from her seat at the table.  She walks over to Dylan and hugs him.  

 

"Thanks, Margaret."

 

"Dylan, I wish you the best, man,"  says Matt, shaking Dylan's hand.  

 

While Matt and Margaret are congratulating the young couple, Donna looks on with a worried expression on her face, certain that Jasmine will bring Dylan nothing but heartache, and she feels powerless to do anything to stop it.

Southfork....

 Suffering from a terrible hangover, Lucas is standing at the sink in his bathroom splashing cold water on his face when he hears a knock at his bedroom door.  Lucas ignores the knock.  He comes out of the bathroom and back into his bedroom, where he goes to the table beside his bed and picks up his almost empty bottle of bourbon.  He is about to open the bottle and take a sip when Bobby comes into the room.  

 

"Lucas,"  Bobby says.  "Son we need to talk."

 

Lucas turns around to face his father.  "Talk?  About what?"

 

"Let's go downstairs,"  Bobby says.  

 

"I'd rather talk right here,"  Lucas says, opening his bottle of bourbon.

 

"No, Lucas,"  Bobby says, taking the bottle from Lucas's hand.  "Let's go downstairs.  Your mother is here, and she also wants to talk to you."  

 

A minute later, Bobby and Lucas walk into the living room, where they Ann, Christopher, Jenna, and Charlie are waiting.  "Well, well, the gang's all here,"  Lucas says sarcastically.  "What the hell's goin' on?  Some kind of intervention  or somethin'?"

 

"Lucas, we're here because we all love you, and we're all concerned about you,"  Jenna says.  

 

Lucas looks at Charlie, seated on the sofa next to Jenna.  "How about you, Sis?  You come all the way down here from New York because you're concerned about me?"

 

"Lucas, we are ALL worried sick about you," Charlie says.  "When Mom told me about........about what's been going on with you.......I knew I had to come and see if I could help."

 

"When Mom told you what's been going on with me?  And just what did Mom tell you has been going on with me?"

 

"Why don't we just stop beating around the bush here and come right out and say why we're all here?"  Christopher asks, standing from his seat.  "Lucas, we're all here because you've been drowning yourself in booze for months, and we're tired of watching you destroy not only yourself, but your sons, too.  You're not the only one hurting over Heather's death."

 

"I suppose you're hurting over her death, too, huh, big brother?"  Lucas asks.  "If I recall, you were once in love with my wife years ago.  Maybe you still were?"

 

"Lucas, that'll be enough of that,"  Bobby says.

 

"Oh, I don't think so, Dad.  As long as we're getting things off our chests here, why don't we discuss my PERFECT older brother and his feelings for my wife."

 

"Lucas, you're being a jackass,"  Christopher angrily says.  "You're killing yourself and you're pushing your son away.  I had a little talk with Michael last night. If you don't straighten yourself up and act like a father, you're gonna lose that boy."

 

"My son is none of your damned business,"  Lucas says.  "Michael is MY son, Christopher.  Not yours.  I thought now that you finally have a son of your own, you'd stop trying to act like a daddy to mine."

 

"The only reason I'm not knockin' you on your ass right now is because I know this is the booze talking and not you," says an angry Christopher.

 

"Take your best shot, brother," Lucas says.

 

"Alright, stop it!"  Jenna says.  She gets up from her seat and walks over to her son.  "Lucas, you have to pull yourself together.  Just look at you.  I can smell the alcohol on you.  You've let yourself go.  When was the last time you even showered or combed your hair?  Damn it, Lucas, you're not a child.  You're a grown man.  You're 35-years-old and you have two boys who need their father, but you're throwing not only your life away, but your sons' lives, too."

 

"I can't tell you how many times I've heard Logan cryin' himself to sleep at night,"  says Ann, struggling to hold back her own tears.  

 

"Lucas, when I lost Phillip, and I was going through the same kind of debilitating depression that you are now," Charlie says.  "The thing that got me through it and finally snapped me out of it was asking myself what Phillip would say if he could see me now.  What do you think Heather would say if she could see YOU right now?"

 

"I can tell you what she'd say,"  Bobby says.  "She'd say, Lucas, what the hell are ya doin'?  Just look at you.  You're a mess.  She'd say pull yourself out of this pity party, put that damned bottle down, help our boys through this, and start livin' again.  THAT'S what she'd say."

 

Tears begin falling down Lucas's face.  "Start livin' again?  I wish to God I knew how."  Lucas breaks down in tears.  

 

Jenna puts her arms around her son and embraces Lucas as he cries.  "You can, sweetheart.  You can, and you WILL.  We're all here to help you."

 

Lucas pulls out of his mother's embrace, walks across the room to the fireplace and looks up at his grandfather Jock's portrait.  "All the stories I've heard about that man,"  he says.  "How strong Jock Ewing was.  How he was a real man's man.  I'd give anything if I can be like that."

 

Bobby goes over and puts his hand on Lucas's shoulder.  "Son, you're one of the best men  I know.  You're a man your granddaddy would be proud of.  You just lost your way for a while.  I think that everyone in this room can say that we, too, have lost our way at least once in life.  I know I did after April died.  I was consumed with anger and the desire for revenge against the people responsible for her death.  I thought I wouldn't be able to rest until the woman responsible for getting April killed was caught and brought to justice."

 

Lucas slowly turns around to face Bobby.  "That's exactly how I feel right now.  I won't rest until I see Heather's killers pay."

 

"Heather's killers?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Dad, why didn't you tell me?  Why didn't ANYONE tell me?"

 

"Lucas, I'm not sure I know what you mean."

 

"I overheard John Ross telling you that Jeremy Wendell was behind the car accident that killed my wife.  He was trying to kill Krystina to hurt John Ross, but it was Heather who was driving Krystina's car that day."

 

"Son, I'm so sorry,"  Bobby says.  "I wanted to tell you, I just......"

 

"You just didn't think that I'd be able to handle it."

 

"Frankly, no, I didn't.  Not in your condition."

 

"Bobby, what are you two talking about?"  Jenna asks.  "Jeremy Wendell is responsible for Heather's 


death?"

 

Bobby sighs.  "Yes.  Wendell is part of this shadowy organization that wants to take over some of the major corporations in the country in a bid to try and gain control of the economy."

 

"Wendell?"  Charlie asks.  "He's what, almost a hundred now?  How does he have that much power at this point?"

 

"Wendell may be old, but he's just as evil and dangerous as he ever was,"  says Christopher.

 

"He's more evil and dangerous now than he ever was before,"  Bobby says.  

 

"But why Heather?"  Jenna asks.

 

"That car bomb wasn't meant for Heather,"  Bobby replies.  "She was driving Krystina's car, so it was meant for her.  Wendell and his organization want to take Ewing Oil away from us.  Look, it's a long and complicated story and we're not here to discuss that right now.  We're here for our son."

 

"You're right,"  Jenna says, walking over to Lucas.  "I can't even imagine the pain you must have felt after learning about Wendell's involvement."

 

"I want that son of a bitch to pay for what he did,"  Lucas says.  "I wanna make him suffer the way he's made me suffer."

 

"And he will, son,"  says Bobby.  "I guarantee it.  We're going to bring Wendell down, just the way this family did before.  But in the meantime........Lucas, you have got to get yourself together and stop drinking."

 

"Stop drinking?  Drinking is the only way I can deal with this pain,"  Lucas says in tears.  "It's only when I'm drunk out of my mind that I don't feel any pain."

 

"Son, I know how you feel, BELIEVE ME, I do.  I'm gonna tell you the same thing I told your cousin Lucy many years ago when she was on drugs.........if you don't feel pain, then you're not really livin'.  But the pain doesn't last.  You'll never get over missing Heather.  But with time, the pain and loss will get a little better and then you'll be able to remember all the wonderful times you shared."

 

"And think about what Charlie said,"  Jenna adds.  "Think of how Heather would feel and what she'd say to you if she could see you the way you've been these past few months.  She would want you to get on with your life.  She would want you to take care of those two boys who so desperately need their father."

 

Lucas begins to cry.  "I don't know if I can.  I don't know if I have the strength."

 

"You do, son,"  Bobby says.  "You have that strength inside of you."

 

"And we're all here to help you, Lucas,"  Christopher says.  "If you'll just let us."

 

"And I will be here for as long as you need me,"  Charlie says.  "I've taken a leave of absence from my job, so I'll be in Dallas for a while."

 

Ann walks over to Lucas and embraces him.  "Lucas, we all love you, and we're all here for you."

 

Lucas nods.  "I know."

 

Ann turns to Bobby.  "I have to go.  Krystle was scheduled to be taken into surgery a little while ago, and I really would like to be there for Krystina."

 

"Of course, honey, you go ahead.  I'll come by the hospital in a little while."

 

"Bobby, why don't you go on with Ann?"  Jenna asks.  "Charlie and I will stay here with Lucas."

 

"Mom, I don't need a babysitter."

 

"I know you don't, sweetheart, but we'd like to spend some time with you."

 

"Are you sure, Jenna?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Yes, I'm sure.  You go on.  We'll be fine."

 

"Alright, then,"  Bobby says.  "Come on, honey, let's go."

 

"I'll come by later,"  says Christopher.  "I wanna check on Erin first."

 

Bobby nods, then he and Ann leave.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....later....

Half an hour later, Bobby and Ann walk into the waiting room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where John Ross, Krystina, her sister Fallon, and brother Steven Carrington are seated.  "Bobby, Ann, thank you so much for coming,"  Krystina says, getting up from her seat to greet them.

 

"We both wanted to be here,"  Ann says.  "I'm sorry we couldn't come earlier, but we had somethin' we had to take care of."

 

"It's alright.  They only took Mom down about half an hour ago."

 

Ann reaches out and touches Krystina's arm.  "She's gonna be fine.  You have to believe that."

 

"I'm trying."

 

John Ross gets up and approaches his uncle.  "Can we talk in the hall?"  He asks.

 

"Sure,"  Bobby replies.  

 

"Darlin', I'll be right back,"  John Ross tells Krystina.  He and Bobby leave the waiting room and begin walking down the hallway.  "I talked to Bum a little while ago."

 

"Oh?  Has he found anything in his investigation?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Not about Wendell.  At least nothin' we didn't already know.  But, he has come up with somethin' on Barnes."

 

"So tell me."

 

"When Barnes was in law school at Harvard, he was involved in a relationship with this woman named Karen Watson.  She worked as a waitress in the campus cafeteria and that's how they met.  It was a real volatile relationship, even violent at times.  Barnes was pretty wild in those days.  Anyway, about a year into the relationship, Barnes fell in love with Karen's fraternal twin sister, Kimberly, and they had an affair behind Karen's back.  Things got real complicated when Kimberly got pregnant with Barnes's child.  When Karen found out...... she killed herself.  Overdosed on sleepin' pills.  Barnes was so torn up that he didn't wanna have anything to do with Kimberly or her child, so he pressured her.......more like FORCED her.....to have an abortion.  Then he paid her a lot of money to disappear.  He didn't want his Mama Marilee or anybody else findin' out about this because he was head of several student organizations on campus and it would've ruined his solid reputation."

 

"Any idea what happened to this Kimberly Watson, or if we can contact her?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Oh yes.  I know exactly where she is."

 

"This might just be the scandal we need to derail Barnes's campaign, IF we can get proof."

 

"Don't worry, Uncle  Bobby.  There's proof of everything, as well as a little surprise as a bonus," John Ross says.

 

"Surprise?  What surprise?"

 

John Ross smiles.  "Just trust me, Uncle Bobby.  There's no way in hell Brad Barnes is ever gonna become a United States Senator from Texas."

 

"I wouldn't be too sure of that, John  Ross.  These days, voters seem willin' to overlook a lot of things, especially democratic voters.  A scandal that would wreck a political career thirty years ago may or may  not have the same affect today."

 

"It will.  Just trust me,"  John Ross says.  "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back in there for my wife."  

 

John Ross goes back into the waiting room, leaving Bobby alone in the hallway, wondering what his nephew has up his sleeve.

Braddock High School....

Michael is placing a book into his locker in the hallway at Braddock High School.  

 

"Michael?"  He hears someone call his name from the crowd.  Michael turns around and sees another boy his age approaching him.  "How'd you do on old lady Warren's test?"

 

"I dunno,"  Michael replies.  "Who cares?"

 

The other boy shrugs his shoulders.  "Dude, you wanna come over to my house after school?  I got the new Evil Dead game.  It's really awesome, and I got new controllers for my PlayStation."

 

"No, thanks,"  Michael replies.  "Games are for kids."

 

"Since when?"  The other boy asks.

 

"Since I said so."

 

"Well, okay, then.  We could just hang out."

 

"I can't,"  says Michael.

 

The other boy is about to say something when a third boy comes up to them.  

"Michael, what's up, dawg?"  The third boy says with a smile.  "Still comin' over after school?"

 

"Sup, Jamal.  Yep, sure am,"  Michael replies.  

 

Jamal looks at the other boy.  "Why don't you get lost, dork?"

 

The first boy looks at Michael.  "Guess I'll see you later," he says sadly, and walks away.

 

"Why do you hang around with dorks like him?"  Jamal asks.

 

"T.J.'s okay,"  Michael replies.  

 

"Michael, you're way too cool to hang out with nerds like him.  You hang with me, and I'll get you in with the cool kids.  We can show ya how to have a real good time."

 

Michael smiles at the prospect.  His friend T.J. is standing nearby, a sad look on his face.

 

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....

 Bobby, Ann, John Ross, Krystina, Christopher, Alex, and Krystina's siblings Steven Carrington and Fallon Carrington Colby continue to sit in the waiting room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital as they anxiously await word on Krystle's condition.  John Ross and Krystina are sitting alone on a sofa.  John Ross whispers something to his wife, and she nods.  Then he gets up and leaves the room, taking his cell phone out of his jacket pocket as he walks into the hallway.  After John Ross leaves, Steven Carrington gets up from his seat, walks over and sits down on the sofa beside Krystina.  

 

"How ya holdin' up?"  Steven asks his sister.

 

Krystina sighs deeply.  "I'm a nervous wreck.  I wish we could hear something."

 

"They'll let us know as soon as the surgery's over,"  Steven says.  "Waiting is always the hardest part."

 

Krystina nods.  

 

"Y'know, I've been trying to wrap my head around what you told me about Adam.  That he's involved in some sinister, secret organization determined to take over the country.  But then again, knowing our brother the way I do, I guess I'm not surprised."

 

"Nothing Adam does surprises me anymore," says Krystina.  "I don't think I can ever forgive him for what he did to John Ross.  He lured him into that bogus offshore deal and that cost John Ross Ewing Oil."

 

"Not to mention him being involved with these people who tried to kill you."

 

"Yeah, that too,"  Krystina says, taking a sip from a cup of coffee.

 

 

"Do you think you're still in danger from these people?"  Steven asks.

 

"No, I don't think so.  It's been several months since my car was sabotaged, and nothing else has happened, so, I'm guessing that since John Ross lost the contest for control of Ewing Oil to his nephew Clay, which is what Jeremy Wendell and his associates wanted, there's no more danger."

 

"Just wait til I get back to Denver,"  Steven says.  "I plan on paying our big brother a visit and making him pay for what he's done to you."

 

"Steven please, don't.  John Ross and I will deal with Adam in our own way.  This is our fight."

 

"Krystina, you're my baby sister.  Anyone who hurts you is gonna have to deal with me, even if it's Adam."

 

Krystina smiles as she reaches over and touches her brother's hand.  "Thank you."

 

John Ross comes back into the room, a worried look on her face.  

 

"Were you able to reach Bum?"  Krystina asks.  

 

"Yes.  Yes, I was,"  John Ross replies.  "He still hasn't found the information we need to take down Barnes."

 

"John Ross, Krystina filled me in on what's been going on, and on Adam's involvement,"  Steven says.  "And I want you to know that if you need any help, you can count me in."

 

"I appreciate that, Steven,"  John Ross says.  

 

"Anytime.  My sister means a lot to me, and I'd do anything for her."

 

Mitch and Dr. Burgamy come into the room.  Krystina and the rest of the assembled family stand and gather around the two doctors.

 

"Is the surgery over?"  Krystina asks.

 

"Yes, your mother is in recovery."

 

"How is she?"  Krystina asks.

 

"Mrs. Carrington came through the surgery very well.  And from all indications, we were able to remove all of the tumor."

 

"Thank God,"  Fallon says.

 

"Is my mother going to be alright?"  Krystina asks.

 

"It's still too early to tell," replies Dr. Burgamy.  "We won't know anything until Mrs, Carrington is awake and alert, which likely won't be until sometime tomorrow.  As I said, she came through the surgery very well.  My main concern is your mother's age.  This is a very serious and risky operation even for someone much younger, but for a woman of 80, the risks of complications more than doubles.  Right now, all we can do is keep her under close observation and watch for complications such as infection."

 

"When can I see her?"

 

"In  a little while,"  Mitch replies.  "We're going to be moving Krystle into ICU, and once we have her in a room, you can see her, but only the immediate family.....you, Krystina, and your brother and sister., and only one at a time.  The most important thing Krystle needs right now is rest."

 

"Doctor, do you think this operation will correct the problems Krystle has been having?"  Fallon asks.  "The black outs, and the severe memory lapses?"

 

"We hope so,"  replies Dr. Burgamy.  "Only time will tell.  I'm going to check on Mrs. Carrington.  I'll let you all know when she's settled in ICU and you can see her."

 

"Thank you, Dr. Burgamy, for everything,"  says Krystina.

 

"Don't thank me just yet, Mrs. Ewing.  I'll talk to you soon," Dr. Burgamy says, and leaves the room.

 

"Krystina, you look exhausted,"  Mitch says.

 

"I am.  I didn't sleep last night."

 

"After you see your mother, I suggest you go home and get some sleep."

 

"I don't wanna leave her."

 

"You won't be able to stay with her, and there's nothing you can do here except sit and wait," Mitch says.  

 

"Mitch is right, darlin',"  John Ross says.  "Soon as you see your Mama, I'm takin' you home."

 

"I have a few other patients I need to see now, so I'll talk to you all soon,"  Mitch says.

 

"Thank you, Mitch,"  Krystina says as Mitch leaves the room.  

 

John Ross puts his arms around Krystina and embraces her.

The Krebbs Ranch....afternoon....

 Ray, Donna, Matt, and Margaret walk into the Krebbs home afternoon following the funeral of Matt's friend and former campaign manager Peter Stanton.  "Anybody want a drink?"  Ray asks.  "I sure could use one."

 

"So could I,"  says Matt.

 

"I think we all could,"  Donna says.

 

Ray goes to the bar in  the living room and pours four glasses of scotch, handing one to Matt, one to Donna, and one to Margaret.  "Sure was a beautiful service,"  Ray says.

 

"Yes it was,"  says Matt.

 

"I feel so awful for Peter's wife,"  Margaret says.  "And especially his poor kids."

 

"So do I,"  says Matt.  "I hope to God the cops find Peter's killer soon and punish them to the fullest extent of the law."

 

"Matt, if you want, we could cancel the debate tonight,"  Donna says.  

 

"No, absolutely not,"  Matt says.  "The election is in a few weeks, and we need to continue to get our message out to voters, especially the undecided voters."

 

"You're right, we do."

 

"Are you sure you're feeling up to a debate tonight, under the circumstances?"  Margaret asks.

 

"Yeah, I'm fine.  My main focus right now is defeating Barnes and his party's agenda."

 

"Alright, then, we need to go over some of the questions that might be asked, and how you're gonna answer them."

 

"And while you guys are doing that, I'm gonna go over to Mitch and Lucy's and pick the kids up."

 

"Okay,"  Mitch says.  "Thank Lucy again for watching the kids while we were at Peter's funeral."

 

"I will,"  Margaret says.  She kisses Matt, and then leaves.  

 

Donna looks at Matt.  "Well, shall we get to work on those questions?"

 

"Yeah, let's do this."

 

"Well, since y'all don't need me, I think I'll go up and change,"  Ray says.  "I have some work I need to do around the ranch."  Ray gives Donna quick kiss, and then he goes upstairs.

 

"Are you sure you're okay?"  Donna asks.  "I know how close you were to Peter."

 

"I'm okay.  Just mad as hell.  If I hadn't asked Peter  to be my campaign manager, he'd still be alive right now."

 

"Matt, don't blame yourself for what happened to Peter."

 

"Why not?"  Matt asks.  "It's true."

 

"Listen to me.  This was NOT your fault.  Craig Ewing and the people working with him are the ones responsible for Peter 's death, NOT you."

 

"Yeah,"  Matt says.  "Craig Ewing.  And I'm gonna make damn sure Craig Ewing and Jeremy Wendell and whoever else is a part of this pays dearly."

 

"Best way to do that is to win that election in a few weeks."

 

"You're right.  So let's get started on practicing for that debate tonight.  I wanna be in top form."

A home in Braddock....

 Michael and his friend Jamal Williams are listening to the latest hit song by hip hop artist Drake in Jamal's bedroom that afternoon.  "Bro, I LOVE this song," Jamal says.  

 

"Yeah, it's definitely one of Drake's best songs,"  Michael agrees.  

 

Jamal turns down the volume of the music.  "You okay, man?  You seem a little down today."

 

"Not really,"  Michael says.  "I'm just not lookin' forward to goin' home."

 

"How come?"  Jamal asks.  "Man, if I lived in a bad ass place like Southfork Ranch, I'd never wanna leave.  So what's goin' on, my man?"

 

"It's my Dad.  I can't even stand being around him anymore."

 

"Trust me, I know what you mean.  My Dad's been comin' down on me pretty hard lately, too."

 

"It's not that, man,"  Michael says.  "My Dad's changed.  All he does is get drunk all the time.  I can't even talk to him.  I can't even remember the last actual conversation I had with him.  Ever since my Mom died, everything's just so messed up."

 

"Damn, bro, I'm sorry.  Well, I can't do nothin' about your family problems, but I do have somethin' that'll make you feel better."

 

"Nothin's gonna make me feel better, dude."

 

"Wanna bet?"  Jamal asks.  He walks over to his closet and opens it.  Reaching up, he takes a shoe box from the top shelf and opens it.  Jamal brings out a plastic bag.  "This will make you feel better, man.  I guarantee it."

 

Michael looks at the bag in shock.  "Dude, you smoke weed?"

 

"Hell yeah, bro.  C'mon.  I'll roll us a blunt, and I promise you'll be feelin' better in no time."

 

"I......I dunno, man."

 

"Michael, come on.  Don't tell me you aint never done it."

 

"Uh, yeah, sure I have,"  Michael lies.  "I just......"

 

"Michael, you feelin' like crap.  This stuff will make you feel better.  Put on another song and I'll roll us one."

 

Michael looks at his friend, then at the bag of marijuana.  The boy is extremely conflicted, unsure of what to do.  On one hand, he doesn't want to appear uncool in front of his friend, while on the other, the thought of smoking marijuana makes him feel very uncomfortable.  

Southern Methodist University....

 That evening, a large audience gathers in the studio of SMU-TV on the campus of Southern Methodist University for the debate of Senatorial candidates,  Matthew Culver and Bradley Barnes.  As the debate is about to begin at 8 PM sharp Central Standard Time, select television stations come on air with the debate live.  

 "Good evening," says a male news anchor, coming on air with the debate.  "I'm Byron Evans."

 

"And I'm Karen Nielsen, and welcome to live coverage of the Senatorial debate between Republican incumbent Texas Senator Matthew Culver, and his democratic opponent, Bradley Barnes," the female anchor says.

 

"We're coming to you live tonight from the studios of SMU-TV on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas.  This is the first and only debate between the two candidates before next month's pivotal mid-term elections.  The debate will last approximately 90 minutes, and both candidates have agreed that no question is off the table."

 

"The rules are quite simple,"  Karen Nielsen says.  "The moderator will ask a question directed at one of the  candidates.  The candidate will have 90 seconds to answer the question, his opponent will have 90 seconds to respond, and the candidate the question was originally directed at will have 60 seconds for a rebuttal."

 "And without further ado," Byron Evans says.  "Let's bring out our two candidates.  First, please welcome Republican candidate, Senator Matt Culver."

 

The crowd erupts into applause as Matt enters the stage and takes his place at the podium, waving at the crowd as he goes.

 

"And please welcome Senator Culver's democatic opponent, Dallas business man and former head of the Oil Regularory Commission, Bradley Barnes."

 

Once again, the crowd applauds as Brad makes his way to the podium and takes his place.  He flashes a quick wave to the crowd, but his demeanor indicates that he is not as comfortable in front of the crowd as the more seasoned Matt Culver is.  

 

"I think for those of you who may not be familiar with our candidates, a little introduction may be in order," Byron Evans says.  "Senator Matthew Culver was born in Austin, Texas, the son of United States Senator Dave Culver and his wife, Luann Culver, and grandson of former Governor and Senator Sam Culver.  Senator Culver attended public and private schools in Washington, D.C., graduating from Hillcrest Academy Prep School in 2000.  He then went on to attend his father's old alma mater, the University of Texas, graduating with a B.A. in political science in 2004.  He then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 2008.  Shortly after he was admitted to the Texas Bar Association in January of 2009.  Senator Culver was a member of the Morgan & Morgan Law Firm in Austin, Texas from 2009 to 2010, and then worked as an assistant district attorney for the Travis County, Texas District Attorney's office from 2010 until 2013.  In 2013, he was appointed by then-Governor Rick Perry to finish serving his father's term in the United States Senate following Senator Dave Culver's death from cancer..  In 2016, young Senator Culver won a landslide election in his own right.  The Senator is married to the former Margaret Krebbs, and has two children, Ethan and Madison."

"Bradley Barnes was born right here in Dallas," Evans continues.  "He was the son of Marilee Hurst Stone and local attorney, business man Clifford Barnes.  As a child, Mr. Barnes attended several private schools in New England.  He graduated from Winchester Prep School For Boys in 1996, after which he attended Boston University, graduating in 2001 with a B.S. in History, and a minor in Journalism.  Mr. Barnes worked a variety of jobs in the private sector, including serving as president of several companies.  Most recently, he was appointed as head of the Oil Regulatory Commission.  Gentlemen, welcome."

 

"Thank you, Byron, great to be here,"  says Brad.  

 

"Gentlemen, if you're both ready, we'll begin,"  Byron Evans says.  "Karen, you get to ask the first question."

 

"Thank you, Byron.  We'll begin with Senator Culver.  Senator, one of the topics on everyone's mind these days is the crisis at the southern border.  You have said in interviews, that if elected, you will work to ensure that the southern borders is closed.  How would you go about making sure that the border is closed, and do you support continuing work on the border wall that was begun during the Trump administration?  You have 90 seconds to respond."

 

"Good evening, Karen, and thank you for that question," says Matt.  "First of all, yes, I will do everything in my power to make sure that our southern border is closed, and secure.  I recently introduced a bill that would hire and place several hundred more agents on our southern border.  While the President of the United States and other prominent democrats continue to claim that the border is not open and that's it's secure, every days thousands of illegal immigrants are pouring across the border into Texas.  These are people not only from Mexico and Central and South America, but from all over the world, including nations such as Iran and Syria.  We have no idea who many of these people are.  Some of them are criminals, some are members of Mexican drug cartels, some are human traffickers, and others are even on our terror watch list.  Once they arrive in the United States and are processed, they disappear, often into the interior of the country.  Not only are illegals coming into our country by the thousands, but drugs are also making their way across the border.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans have already died from Fentanyl, and the problem is only going to get worse unless we take immediate action.  We have to close the border, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens.  I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the isle in the Senate and the House to pass laws securing our  borders and to reform our broken immigration system.  As stated earlier, I've already introduced a bill to do just that.  And to answer the last part of your question, yes.  I absolutely support building the wall, because history has shown us that WALLS DO WORK."

 

"Thank you, Senator,"  Karen says.  "Mr. Barnes, you have 90 seconds to respond."

 

"Thank you, Karen,"  Brad says.  "My opponent says he is in favor of building a border wall.  He claims that the border is wide open and that he will do everything in his power to close the border.  The United States has always been a nation of immigrants.  We WELCOME immigrants."

 

"We welcome LEGAL immigrants,"  Matt says.

 

"Excuse me, but this is MY time to speak now," Brad says.  "My opponent has stated many times that these people coming across the border, seeking asylum in our country, are criminals and undesirables."

 

"Many of them are," says Matt.

 

"My opponent is the epitome of the old racist south.  He is so far to the right on not only the issue of immigration, but many other issues close to the hearts of the American people........abortion, for example.  If my opponent had his way, women would have no choice and no control over their own bodies.  If he had his way, we would revert back to 1950s America, and a time of segregation...."

 

"That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard,"  Matt says, beginning to lose his cool.

 

"Senator, please, this is Mr. Barnes's turn to respond to you," Karen Nielsen says.

 

"Karen, I'm sorry, but I will not stand here and allow my opponent to call me a racist and not defend myself......"

Southfork....

 Alex comes into the darkened kitchen at Southfork that night.  He opens the refrigerator door, reaches in, and takes out a can of Coke.  He opens the soda and takes a large sip.

 

Meanwhile, John Ross is sitting alone in the living room watching the Barnes-Culver debate on TV, 

sipping on a bottle of beer.  A moment later, Alex  comes into the room.  

 

"Hey, what are you watching?"  Alex asks.

 

"This debate between Matt Culver and that moron Barnes,"  John Ross replies.  

 

"It any good?"

 

"Kinda boring.  How was your  night?  What'd you and Bridget do?"

 

"We just went to the movies with some friends,"  Alex replies.  "House sure is quiet for it only to be 10 o'clock."

 

"Krystina's upstairs in bed asleep,"  John Ross says.  "She was exhausted.  I think Uncle Bobby and Ann went to bed to watch the debate, the kids are all asleep, and I have no idea where the hell anybody else is."

 

Alex looks at the TV, and at the two Senatorial candidates debating.  "You think Matt Culver's gonna win that election?"

 

"He damned well better win.  Because with Barnes in the Senate, there's no tellin' what kinda damage he can do.  Last thing Texas needs is a radical democrat in the United States Senate."  John Ross is about to continue when his cell phone rings.  He quickly picks the phone up from the sofa beside him and looks at it.  "Alex, I gotta take this,"  he says.

 

"Okay.  I have a busy day tomorrow, so I'm just gonna head on up to bed.  Night."

 

"Goodnight,"  John Ross says as his son leaves the room.  Once Alex is out of the room, John Ross answers his call.  "Bum?"  He says.  "I hope you're gonna tell me you got some news."

 

"I do.  I finally found the person we been lookin' for, and you're never gonna guess......they've been right here under our nose this whole time,"  Bum says.  

 

"Under our nose?"  John Ross asks.  "By that, you mean they've been right here in Dallas this whole time?"

 

"Sure have.  Do you want me to arrange a meeting?"

 

"Damn right I do.  For tomorrow.  Pick our subject up and meet me on Section 20 at Southfork at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.  Text me when you're on the way."  John Ross ends the call, puts his phone down.  He looks at the television, and at Brad Barnes speaking during the debate on TV.  John Ross smiles.  "So you think you're goin' all the way to the United States Senate, huh, Barnes?  Well, I'm gonna make sure you never get elected to ANY public office in the state of Texas or anywhere else."  John Ross's smile grows larger and he takes a sip of his beer.

Meanwhile....upstairs....

 

 

 

Alex walks into the hallway of the third floor at Southfork, which had once been the attic but had in recent years been remodeled and converted into bedrooms for himself and Michael.  As Alex heads to his own room, he looks just down the tiny hallway at Michael's bedroom door.  Lately, Alex has been very worried about his cousin, and he decides to check on Michael before going to bed.  He walks over and knocks on Michael's bedroom door.  

 

 

In his bedroom, Michael is sitting on his bed staring at a bag full of marijuana he had gotten from his friend Jamal that afternoon.  He is suddenly startled by Alex's knock at his door.  Fearful of getting caught with the marijuana, Michael quickly grabs the  bag and shoves it under his bed.  "Who....who is it?"  He asks.

 

"Alex,"  comes the reply from the hallway.  "Can I come in?"

 

"Umm, sure,"  Michael nervously says.

 

Alex opens the door and walks into the room.  "Hey,"  Alex says.  "Saw your light on.  Just wanted to make sure you're okay."

 

"Sure, I'm okay.  Why wouldn't I be?"

 

 

"Well, I just thought that, with everything going on with your Dad....."

 

"Like I said......I'm fine."

 

"Okay,"  says Alex.  "Well, then, I'm goin' to bed.  I'll see you in the morning."

 

Michael nods.  

 

Alex starts to leave, but he pauses at the door and turns back to Michael.  "The offer I made you a while back still stands.  You ever need to talk or anything, I'm just right across the hall."

 

"I know.  Thanks."

 

Alex looks at him for a couple of seconds, then leaves.  

 

After his cousin is gone, Michael reaches down and brings out the bag of marijuana from under his bed.  Holding it in his hand, he looks at it and lets out a deep sigh as he contemplates what he will do with the marijuana.  

Southfork....the next morning....

 

Christopher is standing in the kitchen at Southfork the next morning staring out the window as he drinks a cup of coffee.  

 

Bobby comes into the kitchen.  "Morning," he says, walking to the counter and pouring himself a cup of coffee.

 

"Morning,"  Christopher replies, continuing his stare out the window.

 

 

 

"What's so interesting out that window?"  Bobby asks.  

 

Christopher smiles.  "I was just watching a couple birds playing out there."

 

"I remember when you were a child, you use to stand outside and watch the  birds play for what seemed like hours."

"I remember that.  And then of course, John Ross would come along and start throwing rocks at the poor little things and scare 'em away."

 

"Sounds like something John Ross would do,"  says Bobby.  

 

"How was Lucas last night?"  

 

"It was a rough one for him.  I checked on him before I came down and he's still asleep now."

 

"I sure hope we got through to him yesterday,"  Christopher says.

 

"So do I.  Your brother has got a long, hard road  ahead of him.  But with the support of the family, he'll make it."

 

Christopher nods and  then takes a sip of his coffee.  

 

"Think I'll have some of that coffee,"  says Bobby.  

 

"There's a fresh pot on the stove."

 

Bobby walks over to the kitchen cabinet, opens it, takes out a coffee mug, and then goes to the stove.  He pours himself a cup.  "Christopher, is somethin' botherin' you?"

 

"Why do you ask?"

 

"Lately, you've seemed kinda down, which really surprises me considering the good news you got regarding the DNA test proving you're K.C.'s father.  I should think you'd be on cloud nine.  You've wanted kids of your  own for so long."

 

"I am happy  about that.  It's somethin' else."

 

"You wanna talk about it?"  Bobby asks. "You know I'm a good listener."

 

Christopher looks at his father.  "Yes, you are," he says.  "Best listener I know."

 

"Is everything okay with you and Erin?"

 

Christopher lowers his head and shakes it.  "No.  Things aren't alright."  After a brief pause  he looks at his father again.  

 

"All relationships go through problems."

 

"The trouble isn't our relationship,"  Christopher says.  He lets out a deep sigh.  "I may as well tell you.  I feel like if I don't tell someone I'm gonna explode."

 

"Sounds serious,"  Bobby says.

 

"It is.  It's about as serious as it can get.  Dad, Erin's sick.  She's real sick."

 

"Sick?"

 

"Yeah.  She has stage 4 cancer..  She told me about the cancer the same night she told me about K.C."

 

"Oh my God,"  Bobby says.  "Christopher, I'm sorry.  Is there anything that can be done?"

 

"We hope so.  I took her to see Mitch Cooper, and he brought in a cancer specialist.  One of the best in the country.  Erin has started treatments.  It's a clinical trial of a new drug they're hoping will at least throw the cancer into remission. Dad it's not fair.  I finally have everything I want.  A good woman I wanna spend the rest of my life with.  A son of my own.  And I might lose Erin."

 

"Christopher, I'm so sorry.  Son, I don't know what to say, except.........have faith.  Remember, I beat cancer.  Erin is young, and she seems strong.  And she has you and my new little grandson to live for."

 

"I'm really trying.  Trying to be strong for her and for K.C."

 

"Does K.C. know about his mother?"  Bobby asks.  

 

"No.  Of course we're gonna have to tell him something soon.  He's a smart kid."

 

Bobby smiles.  "Takes after his father."

 

"Today's gonna be a hard day for Erin,"  Christopher says.  "Her mother is flying in from Memphis for a visit, and Erin is planning on telling her about the cancer.  I offered to be there, but Erin said it was something she has to do by herself.  That's why I came home last night, because Erin wanted some time alone to think about what she was gonna say to her Mom.  I brought K.C. with me."

 

"My grandson is here?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Yeah, he's still asleep in my room."

 

"Well, when he wakes up, I'd like to spend some time with him."

 

"I know he'd love that."

 

"Son.......We're all gonna be pulling for Erin."

 

"I know, Dad."

 

"Would you mind if I tell Ann about it?"

 

"No,  not at all.  Everyone's gonna know soon enough, anyway.  Erin just wanted to tell her parents about it before too many other people found out."

 

"I understand,"  Bobby says with a nod.  "Christopher, why don't you think about moving Erin and K.C. in here?  I think Southfork would be more comfortable for Erin, and it'd be great having all three of my grandsons under this roof."

 

"I'll talk to Erin about it and see what she says."

 

Bobby smiles at his son.

Murray Women's Prison, Gatesville, Texas....

Katherine Wentworth is in her cell at Murray Women's Prison that  morning when a female guard  comes by.  "Alright, Wentworth,"  the guard says.  "Pack up your things.  You're bein' transferred this mornin'."

"Transferred?"  Katherine asks, surprised by the news.  "Why am I being transferred?  And to where?"

 

"No idea.  All I know is the order came down from the top late yesterday that you were bein' transferred to another facility this mornin'.  Now hurry and pack your things. You got fifteen minutes." The guard walks away, leaving Katherine wondering what's going on, and why she is being moved to another prison.  

Cass Winthrop's apartment....

 Cass and Lila are having breakfast in silence that morning.  After several minutes of it, the silence is getting to Cass.  "Boy, this place is like a morgue this morning,"  he finally says.  

 

"Uh-huh,"  Lila replies, seeming to be uninterested in making conversation.  

 

"Lila, look, I know you're missing Corey.  I miss him, too.  But all you have to do is pick up the phone and call our son and talk to him.  Or better yet, go and see him."

 

"Go and see him for what?  To apologize and beg him to come home?"  Lila asks.  "Never."

 

"Lila ....."

 

"Corey lied to us,  Cass.  He kept the truth about him and that.......that Cooper boy a secret for more than a year.  Corey's the one who should apologize."

 

"I agree that Corey should have told us the truth about his sexual orientation.  But given how you reacted, I can't say as I blame him.  And to be perfectly honest, my reaction wasn't much better.  And for that, I'm ashamed."

 

"Ashamed?"  Lila asks.

 

"Yes, ashamed.  "Corey is still our  son, Lila, no matter if he's straight or gay."

 

"Don't say that word in relation to our son."

 

"What word?"  Cass asks.  "Gay?  Lila, whether you like it or not, our son is gay, and there's not a damned thing you can do about it."

 

"I refuse to accept that.  Corey is confused.  He was perfectly fine until he met that Cooper boy.  I'm sure that's what happened.  Daniel Cooper brainwashed him."

 

"Corey wasn't brainwashed.  He hid who he truly is because he didn't think we would accept him, and sadly, he was right."

 

"I don't wanna talk about Corey anymore,"  Lila angrily says.

 

"Okay, then, shall we talk about Jasmine?"  Cass asks.

 

"I don't wanna talk about her, either,"  Lila snaps.  "I can't believe both my children have turned out to be such disappointments.  My son claims he's gay, and my daughter is pregnant by her own cousin."  Lila begins to cry as she finishes her sentence.  "Cass, where did we go wrong?  All I can say is, thank God we moved out of Bay City where everybody knew us."

 

Cass reaches across the table and touches Lila's hand.  "You ask where we went wrong?  Nowhere.  Lila, I'm very proud of both of our kids.  Corey is a fine young man who is forging a career for himself as head of a record company.  And Jasmine.......well, yes, she made a mistake a Dylan.  But at least he's doing the right thing by her and marrying her.  And, they seem to really care for each other."

 

"But they're COUSINS, Cass."

 

"DISTANT cousins, Mom," Jasmine says, walking into the kitchen, having heard much of her  mother and stepfather's conversation.  "Besides, if Dylan and I are okay with it, you should be, too."

 

Lila gets up from her seat at the table to face her daughter.  "Don't be flip with me, missy.  You and Dylan Ewing waltz in here the other night and announce that you're pregnant and you're getting married, and I  had no idea any of this was goin' on."

 

"Mom, I'm an adult.  I don't to get your approval before I sleep with someone."

 

Lila's mouth falls open in shock.  "This is no laughin' matter, Jasmine.  You're pregnant."

 

"I'm very well aware of that,"  says Jasmine.  "Look, Mom, yes, I'm pregnant.  No, I didn't plan it.  But it is what it is.  The fact of the matter is, I love Dylan.  I'm not a child, and Dylan and I aren't two teenagers who made a mistake.  We're  both in our mid-20s.....ADULTS.  So you're just gonna have to accept our marriage, just the way Donna Krebbs is gonna have to accept it."

 

"So you're in love with Dylan Ewing?"  Lila asks.

 

"That's right."

 

"Well, it seems to be, it wasn't that long ago you were in love with his brother, Conner.  So excuse me for bein' a little skeptical about this whole thing."

 

"Umm, Cass,"  Jasmine says.  "Correct me if I'm wrong, but when my Mom got with my Dad and got pregnant with me, it wasn't very long before that that she was deeply in love with and married to some other guy.  Uh, what was his name?  Shane Roberts?"

 

"We're talking about YOU here, not me,"  Lila says.

 

"I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree, did it?"  Jasmine asks.  " I think I'll grab breakfast downtown.  I suddenly lost my appetite for having it here."  She brushes past her mother and walks out of the room.  

 

"No you wait just a minute!!"  Lila yells.  

 

Cass grabs her by the arm.  "Lila, let her go."

 

"Did you hear what she said to me?"  Lila asks.

 

"Yes, I heard."

 

"How dare she talk to me like that?"

 

Cass stands from his seat.  "You know who she reminds me of?  You at that age.  I'll see you later.  I have to get to the office."  Cass also leaves the room as Lila fumes.

A rural road just outside of Dallas....

 A prison bus from the Texas Department of Corrections is traveling down a rural road, headed toward Dallas later that morning.  On board that bus is Katherine Wentworth and one other female prisoner en route to being transferred.  As the bus continues down the highway, a black SUV turns onto the road and begins traveling behind the bus.  Then a second black SUV turns onto the highway from the same road.  Both proceed to follow the bus down the highway.  After a few minutes one of the SUVs pulls ahead of the bus.  The other SUV remains behind the bus for a half a mile, then  finally it pulls along-

side the bus, causing the bus's driver to become nervous and wonder why the two vehicles which look like official unmarked government SUVs are following them.  The second SUV rides alongside the bus for a short distance, then as soon as they come to a rural road turning off the main highway, the first SUV makes a quick turn onto the rural  road.  Almost simultaneously, the second SUV turns into the bus, forcing the driver to also turn off onto the side road.  The first SUV quickly comes to a screeching stop in the middle of the road, and the bus driver is forced to bring the bus to a stop.  The second SUV comes to a stop directly behind the bus, completely blocking it in.  Two masked me with guns drawn emerge from the SUV in front of the bus.  A split second later, two men, also with guns drawn, get out of the SUV parked behind the bus.  While one team stands alongside the bus pointing their weapons at the disabled vehicle, the other team gets onto the bus.  

 

"Katherine Wentworth?"  One of the masked men asks.

 

"Yes?"  Replies Katherine, frightened for her life.

 

"Come with us.  Now."

 

Reluctantly, Katherine gets up from her seat and follows the two men off the bus.  One of the men, as he is about to exit the bus, turns and points his gun at the terrified driver.  Without hesitation, the man pulls the trigger, shooting the bus driver in the head, killing him instantly as the other female prisoner on the bus screams.  The man then points his gun at the woman, shooting her in the head, also killing her instantly.  He exits the bus.  The four men return to their vehicles and get in, one of the men forcing Katherine into the SUV parked in front of the disabled bus. The two SUVs quickly speed off in opposite directions.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....

 John Ross and Krystina walk into Krystle's room at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital late that morning and find Krystle sleeping.  A nurse is taking her vitals.  "How is my mother?"  Krystina asks.

 

"She had a very restful night," the nurse replies.  "She  was beginning to wake up this morning, or so we thought.  But she quickly drifted off to sleep again.  But don't worry.  That's perfectly normal after such an operation, and with the medications your mother is being given.  Her vital signs are good. I'll check on her a little later.  And remember, visits are limited to ten minutes."

 

"Yes, thank you," Krystina says, and the nurse leaves the room.  Krystina looks down at her mother sleeping.  "Just look at her, John Ross.  She's the strongest woman I know."

 

"And that's what's gonna get her through this,"  says John Ross.

 

"I keep trying to tell myself that," Krystina says in tears.  "But John Ross, even though she's been so strong my whole life, I see now that she's starting to become frail.  I think for the first time, I see my mother as old and frail.  I never thought I'd see her that way."

 

"Itn't it amazing?"  John  Ross asks.  "When we're little kids, our parents seem like superheroes.  And they seem so young and vital.  When we're that young it's hard for us to imagine that our parents might some day get old.  And then, next thing we know, we're the age that they were when we were little kids, and they're old."

 

"Almost losing  my mother has made me realize how much she means to me,"  Krystina says.  She pauses and looks at her husband.  "That's why, John Ross, you should really think about your relationship with Sue Ellen."

 

"Krystina......"

 

"John Ross, if something were to happen to her.........you'd never forgive yourself if you didn't make peace with her."

 

"She betrayed me."

 

"I know you see it that way, but Sue Ellen only did what she thought was best for the company, and for you."

 

"For me?  So, sidin' with Uncle Bobby when he kicked me out of Ewing Oil was best for me?"

 

"What I'm trying to say is.......your relationship with your mother is more important than Ewing Oil or your male pride or anything else that stands in the way.  John Ross, your mother is getting on in years herself, and she won't always be around.  Who knows how much longer she WILL be around.  Please, just think about it."

 

John Ross nods.  "I will.  Look, darlin', I have to be goin'.  I have to meet Bum.  I'll see you back at the ranch."

 

"Okay."

 

"I love you,"  John Ross says.  He kisses his wife, and then leaves.  After he's gone, Krystina leans down and gently kisses her mother on the cheek.  

 

Meanwhile, in the hallway outside Krystle's room, John Ross pauses as he thinks seriously about what Krystina said about Sue Ellen.  After a moment he walks down the hall and gets onto the elevator.

Ewing Oil....

 Sue Ellen is working at her desk when Sally buzzes her office.  "Sue Ellen, Mr. Ewing is here,"  Sally says.

 

Sue Ellen smiles.  "Thank you, Sally, send him in."   Sue Ellen stands from her seat at her desk and walks over to meet Catlin as he enters the office.  

 

"Hi, sweetheart,"  Catlin says, greeting her with a kiss.  "You ready to go to lunch?"

 

"Yes, I'm famished."

 

"Good.  Let's go. Is the Tower Club okay with you?"  

 

"The Tower Club is fine,"  Sue Ellen replies.  "Just let me grab my purse.."  Sue Ellen goes back to her desk and opens the bottom drawer, taking out her purse.  "All set."

 

Meanwhile, John Ross steps off the elevator in the reception area and walks into the secretaries' offices, where Sly is putting some papers away in a filing cabinet and Sally is working at her desk.  "John Ross!"  Sly says happily upon seeing her former boss.  

 

"Sly, how're ya doin'?"  John Ross asks, greeting Sly with a hug.  

 

"I'm fine, how are you?"

 

"I'm good.  Sally, how's it goin'?"

 

"Great, John Ross.  It's good to see you,"  Sally replies.

 

"Is my mother here?"  John Ross asks.

 

Before Sly or Sally can answer  John Ross's question, Sue Ellen and Catlin emerge from her office.  Sue Ellen stops short,  surprised to see her son there.  

 

"John Ross,"  she says.  

 

"Mama.  Catlin."

 

"Hello, John Ross,"  says Catlin.

 

"Mama, can we talk?  In private?"  John Ross asks.

 

"Of course.  Let's go into my office.  Catlin, will you excuse me?"

 

"Sure, take all the  time you need,"  Catlin replies. 

 

Sue Ellen and John Ross go into Sue Ellen's office, and she closes the door behind them.  "I'm surprised to see you here,"  she says.  

 

"I know.  Look, I'm gonna just say what I came here to say.  When you sided with Uncle Bobby after 

 he decided to award the presidency of Ewing Oil to Clay Beaumont, I was angry.  REAL angry.  I just couldn't believe that you had sided against me yet again.  I'm still angry, and I probably will be for a long time.  But I don't want us to be enemies.  I don't want us NOT on speakin' terms."

 

Sue Ellen wipes a tear from her face.  "I don't want that, either.  John Ross, I know you feel like I betrayed you when I sided with Bobby.  But I only did it because I love you."

 

"You sided against me because you love me?"

 

"Because I saw you exhibiting the same reckless behavior as you have before.  Going behind Bobby's back and doing something he explicitly told you not to."

 

"I didn't come here for a lecture about my bad judgement.  I came here to try to make peace, but I guess that was a mistake."  He starts to leave.

 

"John Ross,"  Sue Ellen says,

John Ross stops in the doorway and looks back at her.

 

Sue Ellen walks over to him.  "I'm sorry.  I wasn't trying to lecture you.  I'd very much like for us to have a fresh start."

 

John Ross looks at his mother and nods.  "So would I.  Well, I've gotta go.  I have a meetin'"

 

"Alright.  John Ross........I love you."

 

"I love you, too,"  John Ross says.  He leaves the office.  Sue Ellen smiles, happy that her relationship with her son is hopefully, once again on the mend.  

The Omni Hotel....

 Erin Ward and her mother, Ginger, enter Erin's suite at the Omni Hotel.  Erin has just picked her mother up from the airport.  "Mom, if you'd like to freshen up, the bathroom is right over there,"  Erin says.  

 

"Thank you, darling, but I'm fine right now.  I'm just so happy to be here with you."

 

"I'm glad you're here, too."

 

"So when am I going to get to see my beautiful grandson?"  Ginger asks.

 

"I'll call Christopher and have him bring K.C. home in a little while.  I just thought you and I could spend some time together first."

 

"I'd like that.  It's been a while since we've had any time together.  I look forward to getting to know Christopher.  From everything you've told me about him, he sounds like a very special man."

 

"He is, Mom,"  Erin says.  After a moment the smile disappears from her face.  

 

"Erin, are you alright?"  Ginger asks, noticing the change in her daughter's mood.  

 

"Mom, there is something that I need to talk to you about.  That's the main reason I asked you to come to Dallas."

 

"Sweetheart, what is it?"  Ginger asks.  "Is it about Christopher?"

 

"No.   Not exactly.  Mom, I don't quite know how to say this.  All night I've thought about what I was going to say and  how I was gonna say it."

 

"Erin, you're.......you're kind of scaring me right now.  If something is wrong, then please just tell me."

 

"Okay, I will,"  says Erin.  "Mom, a while back, I wasn't feeling well.  I was in pain a lot of the time, and I didn't know what was wrong with me.  So I went to a doctor, and he ran some tests.  And the results were  not good.  Mom, my cancer is stage 4."

 

"What?"  Asks a stunned Ginger.  "Stage 4?"

 

"Yes,"  Erin replies, tears streaming down her face.  

 

"Oh my God.  Erin, how long have you known?"

 

"A few months."

 

"A.......a few months?  A few months, and you're just NOW telling me?  Erin, you told me that you were on chemotherapy pills, and that they were working."

 

"Mom, I know.  I didn't know how to tell you.  I tried so many times, but I could never find the words."

 

Ginger begins to cry.  "Does your father know?"

 

Erin shakes her head.  "No.  I plan to tell him in a couple of days."

 

"You said stage 4?  That's.........."

 

"I know,"  Erin says.  "End stage."

 

"Oh God....no,"  Ginger cries.  

 

Erin takes a seat beside her mother and takes Ginger's hand.  "Mom......"

 

"What about treatments?  Have you been taking any?  What about the pills you told me about?"

 

Erin nods.  "Yes.  Christopher convinced me to see his cousin Lucy's husband, Dr. Mitch Cooper, who is chief of staff at the largest hospital here in Dallas."

 

"Mitch Cooper?  That's Gary and Valene Ewing's son-in -law, right?"  Ginger asks.

 

"Yes.  Mom, Mitch brought a specialist in on my case.  One of the country's top oncologists, and he started me on an experimental new treatment that he hopes will at least stop the spread of the cancer."

 

"Then.....there's some hope,"  Ginger says.

 

"There's a small chance the treatments could work, at least to give me a little more time.  But Mom, it's only a small chance, and it's still no cure."

 

"Maybe not, darling, but it's SOMETHING.  And any hope is better than no hope at all."

 

Erin looks at her mother and smiles.  Ginger returns her daughter's smile and the two embrace.

A pasture at Southfork....

 John Ross is standing alone in the middle of the pasture on Southfork's Section 20.  He is looking out over the horizon and the vast terrain that is Southfork when Bum's truck drives out to the pasture and comes to a stop.  Bum and a young man.......the same young man who works at Brad's campaign headquarters.....gets out of the truck and walk over to John Ross.  

 

"You looked deep in thought,"  Bum says.  

 

"Just take a look out there, Bum,"  John Ross says pointing out over the horizon.  "Nothin' but 

Southfork as far as you can see.  Sometimes I have a hard time believin' that half this place is really mine."  John Ross looks at the young man with Bum.  "Eric," he says.  

 

"Mr. Ewing,"  Eric says, nervously.

 

"You have anything to report to me?"  John Ross asks.

 

"No, not really,"  the boy replies.  "Mr. Barnes has had some meetings, but only with like local city leaders and people like that."

 

"What about phone calls?"  

 

"Look, Mr. Ewing, I know you're paying me a lot of money to spy on Mr. Barnes, but I really don't feel comfortable doing this."

 

"Look, son, I understand how you feel,"  says John Ross.  "Spyin' is a nasty business.  But then again, 

politics itself is a nasty business.  But need I remind you that not only am I payin' you enough money to buy that expensive sports car you wanted in cash, but my friend Bum here is workin' hard to find your birth parents.  You do still wanna find them, don't you?"

 

"Of course, I do."

 

"Then all you have to do is keep your mouth shut, do as you're told, and then you'll be greatly rewarded.  In fact, Bum has already found your birth mother."

 

"He......he has?"  The young man excitedly asks.  "Well, who is she?  WHERE is she?"

 

"Not just yet,"  John Ross says.  "You'll get that information just as soon as you finish this job for me and make sure Brad Barnes doesn't come anywhere near winnin' that election."

 

"How can I stop him from winning the election?"  Eric asks.

 

John Ross smiles.  "Show him, Bum."

 

Bum steps forward, reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small listening device.  John Ross takes it from Bum's hand.

 

"Plant this in Barnes's private office.  Bum has another one that you're gonna put inside Barnes's private phone."

 

"A bug?  Mr. Ewing......"

 

"Now, I know you're not gonna refuse to help someone who's been so kind and generous to you," says John Ross.  "Eric, you'll do as I say.......if you ever wanna find your birth parents."

 

"I could always hire a private detective myself to find them."

 

John Ross laughs.  "Eric, you know that I have a lot of money.  And I do mean a LOT of money.  Enough money to make  sure you never find your real mama.  You don't do as I say, I'll have Bum here make sure she disappears..........and that you never find her."

 

"You'd really do that?"

 

"I wouldn't want to, but I would.  As soon as Barnes loses that election in a few weeks.......you'll get the information about your birth parents.  Do we have a deal?"

 

Eric looks at the small listening device in John Ross's hand.  After a brief pause, the young man reluctantly takes it.  "Deal," he says, a tone of defeat in his voice.  

 

John Ross smiles.  "Good.  Now you go do your job and place those bugs where I told you.  The sooner we have some information that could cost Barnes that election, the sooner you'll be able to meet the woman who gave birth to you.  That's all.  Bum, take him back to town."

 

"Come on, son.  Let's go,"  Bum says.

 

Eric looks at John Ross, then follows Bum back to his truck.  John Ross watches as the two get into the truck and drive away.

Southfork....later....

 "Are you goin' back to the hospital?"  Ann asks, she and Krystina coming down the stairs at Southfork .  

 

"Yes, I'm heading back there now," replies Krystina.  "I just came home because I wanted to check on Ellie.  She had a stomach ache this morning.  And I wanted to pick up a few of my mother's things, like some family photos and such.  I thought having them around her at the hospital would make her  stay there a little more pleasant when she wakes up."

 

Ann smiles.  "I think that's a wonderful idea.  I'll try and come by the hospital a little later this evening."

 

"Alright.  In the meantime, would you mind checking in on Ellie for me?"

 

"Of course, I will."

 

"Thanks, Ann.  I'll see you later."

 

"Okay, and give my love to Krystle and tell her I'll see her soon.

"I will,"  Krystina says as she leaves the foyer.

 

Ann turns and looks back up the stairs and sees Lucas coming down.  "Well, hello  there,"  she says.

 

"Hi,"  Lucas says.  

 

"How're you feelin'?"

 

Lucas sighs deeply.  "Truthfully, I'm not sure.  I've slept so much the last couple of days that I feel..... strangely, I feel exhausted."

 

"Well, you needed the rest.  And by that I mean good, natural rest from fallin' asleep, not from passin' out because you've drank too much."

 

"Speaking of which, I sure do want a drink right now,"  Lucas says.

 

"Lucas......"

 

"Don't worry,"  Lucas says.  "I know I can't.  I may never be able to touch another drop of alcohol again.  Right now my main focus is my boys.  It has to be."

 

Ann gently touches his shoulder.  "I'm so proud of you."

 

"Michael should be getting off the bus right about now.  I'm gonna catch him outside and talk to him."

 

Ann nods, and Lucas walks away.  

 

A moment later, as Lucas comes onto the patio, Michael is walking up to the house, having just gotten off the school bus.  Lucas pauses on the patio as Michael walks toward him.  "Michael," he says.  The boy ignores his father, walks past him, and starts to go into the house.  "Michael, wait," Lucas says.

 

The boy stops and turns to face his father.  

 

"Michael we need to talk," says Lucas.

 

"There's nothing you have to say that I wanna hear."

 

"Michael, look.......I know I haven't been much of a father to you and Logan these last few months.  And I'm sorry.  I just........when your Mom died, something inside of me died, too.  I wasn't able to cope, and I used alcohol as a way of helping me deal with the pain I was in.  I didn't want to accept that your Mom was really gone.  And as long as I stayed drunk, I didn't have to deal with that reality."

 

"Is there a point to this?"   Michael asks.  

 

"Yes, there's a point.  Michael, I'm trying to explain why things have been the way they have for the last few months."

 

"I don't care why things have been the way they've been," says Michael.  "You want me to understand?  Well, I DON'T.  You said you haven't been much of a father to me and Logan since Mom died?  That's not true.  You haven't been a father at all.  You cared more about your liquor than you cared about your own sons.  You were hurting, Dad?  Well, WHAT ABOUT ME??  It was MY Mom who died.  All because of John Ross and Krystina.  My life has been hell since then.  And I couldn't even turn to my own father when I needed him."

 

"I know, and I am SO sorry about that.  But Michael, things are gonna be different from now on.  I promise.  I've stopped drinking.  And I want to be there for you and your little brother.  I want us to start over."

 

"Thanks, but I'm not interested."

 

"Michael......."

 

"You weren't there for me when I needed you,"  Michael says in tears.  "So don't try to be here for me now that I don't need you."  The boy angrily storms into the house, leaving Lucas alone on the patio.  A tear falls down Lucas's face as he realizes that his months of drinking may have pushed his son away from him for good.  

 

Upstairs, Michael storms into his bedroom and slams the door behind him.  He tosses his book bag onto the bed.  He pauses for a few seconds, then unzips one of the compartments on the bookbag.  Reaching in, he takes out a small clear plastic bag tied with a rubber band.  Michael takes the rubber band off and opens the bag.  Inside the bag contains some marijuana, and two small pills.  Michael picks up one of the pills and looks at it, then his mind thinks back to earlier that day.......

Earlier in the day.....

Michael comes out of a side door of Braddock High School and comes into an open courtyard in the middle of the school.  He looks around and sees his friend Jamal Franklin sitting on some steps.  Michael approaches him.  "Hey,"  Michael says.

 

 "Michael, what's up, man?"  Jamal asks.  "You got what we talked about?"

 

"Yeah, right here," Michael replies.  He takes a book from his book bag and hands it to Jamal. 


In turn, Jamal hands Michael a large notebook binder.  "Thanks,"  Michael says.

 

"Text me later," Jamal says. 

 

"I will."

 

"You wanna come over this weekend?  You can spend the night Saturday night."

 

"Yeah,"  Michael replies.  "Yeah, that'd be great.  Well, I gotta catch the bus.  See ya tomorrow, man."

 

"Yeah, see ya, bro,"  Jamal says as Michael walks away, placing the notebook binder inside his bag and zipping it.

 

Michael stands in the middle of his bedroom looking at the bag of marijuana and pills laying on his bed.  After a pause of almost a full minute, he picks up the bag and opens it again.  He takes one of the pills out and looks at it.  He walks over to a corner of his bedroom where a small refrigerator sits.  Michael opens the refrigerator and takes out a can of Coke.  He pops the pill into his mouth and then takes a sip of the Coke.  Michael is heading down a very dark road.

Jeremy Wendell's penthouse and office....

 Craig Ewing steps off the elevator in Jeremy's penthouse.  Making his way down a hallway, he is met by Jeremy's butler.  "Mr. Wendell is expecting me," Craig says.

 

"Yes, Mr. Ewing.  Mr. Wendell is in his office.  He said to send you right in."

 

"Thanks."  Craig goes to Jeremy's office and walks in, closing the door behind him.  He finds Jeremy seated at his desk, his back to the door.  "Jeremy?"  Craig says.

 

Jeremy turns around in his chair and looks at Craig.  "I trust you have some positive news for me.  That election is coming up in a few weeks, and Matt Culver must NOT win."

 

"You don't have anything to worry about.  I've taken care of Culver.  Soon, the only people who'll vote for him for ANYTHING will  be his wife, and maybe his mother."

 

"You're certain of that?"  Jeremy asks.  "The way you've botched everything so far, I'm not sure I can trust you."

 

"You can, Jeremy.  I've proven myself to you over and over."

 

"Ewing, let me make myself perfectly clear.  If Culver defeats Barnes in that election.........then that will show me that I cannot trust you.  And people I can't trust are my enemies.  The last thing you want to be is on my enemies list.  I understand your wife and son are in Dallas now."

 

Craig's heart sinks upon Jeremy's mention of his family.  "What do my wife and son have to do with anything?"

 

Jeremy stands from his seat and walks over to the younger man.  "Do you remember that threat you made to Peter Stanton, regarding his son?"

 

"Yes,"  Craig replies, his voice shaky.

 

"You have a very handsome son, Ewing,"  Jeremy says.  "I understand young Cameron wants to attend SMU next semester.  It'd be a shame if that young man's college career were.......derailed......by a tragic accident of some sort."

 

Craig's fear is replaced by anger upon hearing Jeremy threaten his son.  "Wendell, if any harm comes to my son, I swear to God....."

 

"Don't even think about finishing that sentence, Ewing.  Because I would take any threats you make very personally.  Just do as you're told, and make sure Bradley Barnes is the next United States Senator from Texas.  If that happens, you will have proven your loyalty, and your worth."

 

"Barnes WILL win that election, Jeremy.  You have my word.  As I said, I've already taken care of Culver."

 

"Good.  Good.  Because now that I have no family left except for a daughter who despises me, I'm in need of a new heir to my empire.  You prove yourself to me in every way, and that new heir could be you.  Now, you may go."

 

Craig  nods, then leaves without saying another word to Jeremy.  He leaves the office and makes his way back down the hallway.  He gets on the elevator, and once the doors close, Craig smiles.  "You're right, Jeremy," he says quietly to himself.  "You don't have any family left to leave your empire to.  No one except your great-grandson, Devon Lewis.  But I intend to make sure you never find out about him because nothing will stand in the way of my becoming your sole heir.  Nothing."  Craig's smile grows wider.

Dallas Police Department....

 A detective at the Dallas Police Department is working at his desk late that afternoon when he is approached by another detective.  "Jack," the other detective says.

 

"Yeah, what is it?"

 

"Looks like we got a break on the Peter Stanton murder case."

 

The first detective, Jack, smiles at the news.  "Great.  So we got a suspect?"

 

"Oh yeah," the second detective says.  He hands Jack some papers.  Jack takes the papers and looks at them, his expression turning to one of shock.

 

"You gotta be kidding me," Jack says, looking up at his partner standing in front of his desk.

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital....

 As dusk begins to settle over Dallas, Krystina is sitting at her mother's bedside.  Krystina is about to doze off in a chair by her mother's bedside.  John Ross walks into the room, awakening her.

 

"You were asleep?"  John Ross asks.

 

"Almost."

 

"How's your Mama doin'?"  

 

"Resting comfortably.  She's been close to waking up a few times, but then she hasn't yet.  Are you going to that fundraiser for Matt tonight?"  

 

"Yes, I am,"  John Ross replies.  "Unless you want me to stay here with you."

 

"No.  You go, and wish Matt luck for me.  The Ewings need to be there."

 

"Yeah, but I hate goin' without you.  Sure you won't change your mind?"

 

"No.  John Ross, I don't wanna leave my mother.  I wanna be here when she wakes up."

 

"I understand,"  John Ross says.  

 

Krystina reaches over and takes his hand.  "I'm so glad you went to see your Mom."

 

"So am I.  Well, darlin', I'd better go if I'm gonna make Matt's fundraiser tonight.  I'll be so damned glad when this election is over so I won't have to go to anymore of these dull fundraisers."

 

"It's good that the family is supporting Matt so strongly,"  Krystina says.  "I'm sure he and Margaret really appreciate it."

 

"I'm not doin' it for them," says John Ross.  "I'm doin' it for the country.  Because if Brad Barnes wins that election........then we could be in for a world of trouble.  We've GOT to keep Texas red, at any cost."

 

"I agree,"  Krystina says.  "Well, you go and give Matt and Margaret my best.  Tell them I'm sorry I can't be there."

 

"I will.  I'll see you at home later tonight."  John Ross leans down and kisses her, then leaves.  At the sound of the door closing behind him, Krystle begins to wake up.  She moans out.

 

"Mom?"  Krystina says, taking her mother's hand.  "Mom?"

 

Slowly, Krystle opens her eyes and looks at her daughter.  "Krystina?"

 

"Yes, Mom,"  Krystina says, smiling.  "It's me."

 

"Wha.......where am I?  What happened?"  Krystle sleepily asks.

 

"Mom, don't you remember?  You're in the hospital.  You had surgery yesterday."

 

"Surgery?  Oh, yes."

 

"Yes, don't you remember?  You had a tumor, and the doctors removed it."

 

"Yes.  Yes, I remember."

 

"Mom, I'm gonna call the nurse and let her know you're awake,"  Krystina says.  She looks at her mother and smiles.  "Mom, I love you," she says.

Southfork....

 Bobby and Ann are in their bedroom at Southfork that evening getting dressed to go to Matt's fundraiser.  "Y'know, I'm really surprised Matt's havin' another fundraiser so soon after the last one," Ann says as she puts on a necklace.

 

"Well, with Brad Barnes's campaign outspending Matt's by tens of thousands of dollars, Matt really needs to pull out all the stops at this point,"  says Bobby.

 

"Yeah, but Matt's still ahead in the polls, itn't he?"  Ann asks.

 

"But not by much.   Barnes has been gaining in the polls, and with the Texas democratic party spending so much to help Barnes get elected, Matt might just have an uphill battle in the last couple weeks of this campaign."

 

Ann is about to say something when the doorbell rings downstairs.  "I wonder who that can be," Ann says.  

 Christopher comes down the stairs as the doorbell rings again.  "I got it!"  He calls out.  Christopher opens the front door and is surprised to find the Sheriff of Braddock County on the front porch. "Sheriff Chambers,"  Christopher says.  "What can I do for you?"

 

"Christopher, is your father home?"  Sheriff Chambers asks.

 

"Yes, he's upstairs.  He and Ann are getting ready to go to a fundraiser for Matt Culver."

 

"I need to speak with him.  It's important."

 

A worried look comes over Christopher's face.   "Sure," he says.  "Just hold on, I'll go get him."

 

"Thank you,"  Chambers says.  While Christopher goes upstairs to get Bobby, Chambers walks around the foyer, looking at the few family photos on a table.  He picks up a photo of Lucas, Heather, Michael, and Logan and looks at it.  A moment later, Bobby, Ann, and Christopher come down the stairs.  

 

"Lou,"  Bobby says.

 

"Evenin', Mr. Ewing.  Sorry to bother you at home like this."

 

"My son said you had something important to talk to me about,"  Bobby says.

"Yes.  I have some news I thought you'd wanna know.  And I wanted to deliver it person."

"What is it, Lou?"  Bobby asks.  "Has somethin' happened?"

 

"I'm afraid so, Mr. Ewing.  Katherine Wentworth has escaped from prison."

 

The mouths of Bobby, Christopher, and Ann all fall open in shock.  "Escaped?"  Bobby asks.

 

"Oh my God," says Christopher.

 

"How in the world did that happen?"  Ann asks.  "She was in a maximum security prison."

 

"I know.  Apparently, she  was bein' transferred to another facility this mornin' and the prison transport bus was ambushed."

 

"Ambushed?"  Bobby asks.  "Lou, what do you mean ambushed?"

 

"Apparently, Ms. Wentworth was aided in her escape.  After the bus left the prison, two other vehicles ambushed it, forced it off the road, and then took Ms. Wentworth off the bus at gunpoint.  The driver of the bus and another female prisoner were killed."

 

"They took Katherine at gunpoint?  Lou, are you telling me that someone kidnapped her?"

 

"I'm kinda doubting that,"  Lou replies.  "This was a highly sophisticated and coordinated operation.  Now I can't say for sure, but, my guess is that someone broke Katherine Wentworth out of prison.  But that's not all.  Main reason I came out here to tell you as soon as I found out is because.........the ambush happened right outside of Dallas.  About 35 miles from here."

 

"35........you're tellin' us that Katherine escaped and she's probably in this area?"  Ann asks.

 

"Yes, ma'am.  So knowin' the history between your family and Ms. Wentworth, I would suggest you beef up your security around Southfork."

 

"Thank you, Lou, I'll do just that,"  Bobby says.

 

"Those are all the details I have right now, but as soon as I find out anything else, I'll let you know," says Lou.   "But I thought you'd wanna know about this."

 

"Yes, thank you,"  Bobby says.

 

"I'll be in touch.  Miz Ewing,"  Lou says.

 

"Good night, Sheriff,"  Ann says as Lou leaves.  "Bobby, my God!"

 

"Dad, you think Katherine could have had help from the outside to escape?"  Christopher asks.  

 

"Knowing Katherine as well as I do.......that's exactly what I think happened,"  Bobby replies.  "Someone broke Katherine out of prison.  Question is......who, and why?"

 

"Bobby, what are we gonna do?"  Ann asks.

 

"First thing I'm gonna do is take the Sheriff's advice and get some more security around the ranch," Bobby replies.

 

"And then I think all of us are gonna have to be extra careful whenever we leave Southfork, because until Katherine Wentworth is caught and returned to prison, no one in this family is safe," says Christopher.

 

 

 

"That's where you're wrong, son," Bobby says.  "No one in this family is gonna be safe until Katherine Wentworth is dead."

 

Ann and Christopher exchange worried looks between them.

 

 

 

 

The Tower Club in Dallas....

 Matt's campaign fundraiser is in full swing at the Tower Club later in the evening, with wealthy guests in black tie and evening gowns socializing and discussing business and politics. Matt, Margaret, and Matt's mother, Luann Culver, are shaking hands and greeting guests as they arrive.  An older couple arrive at the fundraiser and immediately approach the Culvers. 

 

 

"Well, good evening, Luann,"  the man says. 

 

"Senator Murphy,"  Luann says as the man greets her with a kiss on the cheek.  "And Helen, it's been a long time."

 

"Yes, it has, Luann, TOO long,"  Helen Murphy says.

 

"Senator, thank you so much for coming,"  Matt says.

 

"Matt, I wouldn't have missed it for the world," Senator Murphy says.  "Your Daddy and me went way back.  Dave and I went to law school together, then started out in politics together in the state legislature way back in the early 70s.  Dave was a good man, and it's easy to see his son turned out just like him."

 

Matt smiles.  "Well, thank you, sir, I couldn't have asked for a better compliment.  Oh, Senator, I don't believe you've ever met my wife, Margaret.  Sweetheart, this is Senator Jim Murphy, one of my father's closest friends, and his wife, Helen."

 

 

"Hello, Senator,"  Margaret says.  "Mrs. Murphy."

 

"Hello, Margaret,"   Jim says.  "And it's FORMER Senator Murphy.  I retired a few years ago."

 

"Luann, we need to get together and catch up,"  Helen Murphy says.  

 

"I would love that.  Why don't I give you a call in a few days, and we can have lunch?"  Luann asks.

 

"Let's do that,"  Helen says.

 

"Well, I see some old friends I wanna go say hello to," says Jim.  "Matt, I'll talk to you later."

 

"You bet, sir,"  Matt says as the couple walks away.  

 

"So that's Senator Jim Murphy,"  Margaret says.  "I've heard so much about him."

 

"Jim and Helen are good people," Luann says.  "Dave and I spent a lot of time with them over the years."

 

"Mom, Dad,"  Margaret says, greeting her parents as Ray and Donna walk up to them.  

 

"Hello, sweetheart,"  Donna says.  "Luann, hello."

 

"Donna, good to see you," says Luann.

 

"Sorry we're late, but your Mama couldn't decide which dress to wear," Ray says.

 

"Well, as Matt's campaign manager, I have to look my best."

 

Matt smiles.  "Donna, you always look your best, no matter what you wear."

 

John Ross approaches the group.  "Evenin', y'all," he says.

 

"John Ross, thank you for coming,"  Matt says.

 

"Wouldn't have missed it for the world.  Uncle Ray.  Donna."

 

"John Ross,"  Ray says.

 

"Where's Krystina?"  Donna asks.

 

"She's at the hospital.  Her Mama had surgery yesterday, and Krystina didn't wanna leave her.  She said for me to wish Matt all the best."

 

"Well, tell her I really appreciate it,"  Matt says.  "And we wish her mother a speedy recovery."

 

"I hope it's nothing serious," says Donna.

 

"Yeah, it's pretty serious, but hopefully the doctors took care of the problem,"  John Ross says as he looks past Donna and sees Justin arriving alone.  "Well, look who's here," he says.

 

Justin walks up to them.  "Hey, everyone," he says.

 

"Justin, how's it goin'?"  Ray asks.

 

"Just fine."

 

"Well, little brother, I'm real surprised to see you here, considerin' the fact that your wife's brother is Matt's opponent," John Ross says.

"Pamela knows that I'm supportin' Matt in this election, and of course, she's supportin' her brother," Justin says.

 

"Justin, I really appreciate your support," Matt says.  

 

Meanwhile, a man takes the podium set up in front of the room.  "Ladies and gentlemen," the man says.  "Please, may I have your attention?  Everyone please make your way to your seats.  Thank you."  The man waits for a couple of minutes until all guests have made their way to  their seats.  "Thank you.  Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to introduce to you now a man who needs no introduction.  A vibrant and compassionate young man who has worked tirelessly for the past decade for the people of Texas.  A young man with a long legacy of public service.  Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the reason we are all here tonight......the current and future United States Senator from Texas.......Matt Culver."  

 

The room erupts into thunderous applause as Matt makes his way across the room to the podium, occasionally shaking hands along the way.  Matt steps onto the podium and shakes hands with the man who introduced him.  Matt takes the podium and waits for the applause to stop.  Meanwhile, two men in suits walk into the room and stand near the door, watching Matt as he begins to speak.

 

"Thank you,"  he says.  "First  of all, I want to thank everyone for being here tonight and for supporting my campaign.  We may be ahead of Brad Barnes in the polls, but the democrats are way ahead of us in terms of funding, so every dime that is raised here tonight will go into the remainder of this campaign, for television spots, campaign posters, and to ensure that we retain this very important seat in the United States Senate."  The crowd again applauds.  Once the applause ends, Matt continues with his speech:  "What we're fighting for is more than just a Senate seat.  We're fighting for our Democracy.  We're fighting for our very way of life, and for the future of not only the state of Texas, but the future of the greatest country that's ever existed, the United States of America!"  Once again, applause erupts from the crowd.  "We're fighting against open borders, and a broken immigration system.  We're fighting against the disastrous  policies of this administration, and for the future of and the very survival of our oil industry.  My opponent and his party seek to end fossil fuel in this country.  They seek to destroy the very industry that is the lifeblood of our economy, which, to me is incredibly hypocritical given the fact that my opponent has very deep roots in the oil industry himself.  His grandfather founded an oil company, which his mother inherited and ran for many years.  His father was  heavily involved in the oil industry, but now Brad Barnes has turned against the very industry that made his family's fortune, and has placed him where he is today.  It is vital that Republicans retake  not only the House in this election, but also the Senate, and in two more years, the Presidency because we cannot afford four or six more years of these disastrous policies that are destroying our country."  Another round of applause, and Matt continues.  "I pledge to you tonight that once I am re-elected to the Senate, I will work tirelessly for the people of the state of Texas. I will work to make sure our southern border is closed and secure.  I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the isle to pass legislation to make sure that no child is hungry in our state, that no person is left behind, and that our educational system is restored to its original purpose, which is to teach our children and not indoctrinate them to a certain ideology.  We have much work left to do.  And together, we can finish the job we set out to do.  We can finish the job you elected me to do, and we can restore this country to its former greatness.  I make another pledge to you here tonight.  When I am re-elected, I will fight to my last breath to protect your rights as Texans and as Americans.  Your right to freedom of speech.  Your second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.  I will fight for the rights of unborn babies to live, for the rights of women to have equal pay as men for the same job, and to make sure your children are protected from those who would seek to do them harm and those who would wish to indoctrinate them with an ideology that goes against the values of you the parents.  Together, we can and will win this fight.  I thank you, God bless you, God bless Texas, and God bless the great United States of America!  Thank you!!"  As Matt finishes speaking, the crowd begins applauding, and even gives Matt a standing ovation.  He smiles and waves at the crowd, then he steps off the podium.  

 

Meanwhile, standing near the door are two detectives from the Dallas Police Department.  "Okay, let's go,"  one of them says.

 

"No, wait," the other detective says, placing his hand on the other man's shoulder.  "Let's at least do this privately."

 

Matt makes his way through the crowd and back to where Margaret, Luann, Ray, Donna, John Ross. and Justin are standing.  He shakes a few hands along the way. 

 

"Matt, that was one hell of a great speech,"  Ray says.

 

"Thank you."

 

"I agree,"  Donna says.  "I think that was one of your best.  Your father and grandfather would be very proud."

 

"Yes, they would,"  says Luann.  

 

"I know I sure am proud,"  Margaret says, kissing her husband.  

 

"You know, we might just have the makings of a future president here,"  Donna says.  "And THAT is a direct quote from Newsweek."

 

Matt smiles.  As he is about to say something, the two detectives approach.  

 

"Excuse us, Senator,"  one of the detectives says.  

 

"Yes, may I help you?"  Matt asks.

 

"I'm Detective Fields, this is Detective Hannigan.  Senator we need to speak with you in private."

 

"In private?"  Matt asks.  "Of course.  There's an office just down the hall."

 

"May we ask what this is about?"  Donna asks.

 

"We can't get into that here, ma'am," Detective Hannigan replies.  "Senator?'

 

"I'm coming with you,"  Margaret says.  

 

Matt and Margaret make their way to the door and leave the fundraiser with the two detectives.  

 

"Maybe they have some news about Peter Stanton's murder,"  Ray says.  

 

Meanwhile, Matt,  Margaret, and the two detectives walk into an office down the hall from the Tower Club Restaurant where the fundraiser is being held.   Matt closes the door behind them.  "So, what can I do for you gentlemen?"  Matt asks.  "Is this about the murder of my former campaign manager, Peter Stanton?"  

 

"Yes, Senator, it is," replies Detective Fields.  

 

"Have you arrested his killer?"  Matt asks.

 

Detective Fields takes a clear plastic bag from his pocket and shows it to Matt.  "Senator, does this ring belong to you?"  The detective shows Matt the bag containing a class ring.  

 

"Yes, it does.  Where did you find this ring?  I've been missing it for a few weeks now."

 

"Your ring has been missing?"  Detective Hannigan asks.

 

"Yes."

 

"Senator, that ring was found in some grass on the bank of the Trinity River,"  Detective Fields says.  "Not far from where the body of Peter Stanton was discovered."

 

"The river?"  Matt asks.

 

"Yes,"  Hannigan replies.  

 

"Senator, is this your gun?"  Fields takes out a photo of a .38 caliber handgun and shows it to Matt.  

 

"No.  I mean, I do own a .38 exactly like this, but it's back at my house in Austin."  

 

"You sure about that, Senator?"  Hannigan asks.  

 

Matt looks at the two detectives with concern.  "Yes."

 

"What is this all about?"  Margaret asks.

 

"Senator Culver, Peter Stanton was your campaign manager, right?"  Fields asks.

 

"Yes, he was."

 

"But the two of you'd had a falling out?"

 

"A bit of a falling out, yes."

 

"About what?"  Fields asks.

 

Matt sighs.  "I found out Peter was working for Brad Barnes."

 

"Your campaign manager was working for your opponent?"

 

"Yes.  The Barnes campaign blackmailed Peter into working to ensure that I lost the election.  Look, what's going on here?  Why are you asking me all these questions?  I already spoke to the police about Peter the morning after his body was found."

 

"Senator Culver, as he said earlier, we found your University of Texas class ring on a bank of the Trinity River, near where Stanton's body was discovered.  And this .38 caliber handgun.......is registered to you,"  Fields says.  "It was discovered in some woods near the river as well."

 

"It was the gun used in Stanton's murder,"  says Hannigan.  "And your fingerprints are on the weapon."

 

"What?"  Margaret asks.  

 

"That's impossible,"  Matt says.

 

"I'm sorry to have to do this, Senator Culver,"  Fields says.  "But you are under arrest."

 

"What?  NO!  You can't do this!"  A frantic Margaret protests.

 

"Please place your hands behind your back, Senator,"  Hannigan says.  

 

Reluctantly and in shock, Matt complies with the detective's order.

 

"Senator Matthew Culver,"  Fields says as Hannigan handcuffs Matt.  "You are under arrest for the murder of Peter Stanton.  You have the right to remain silent.  Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.  You have the right to an attorney.  If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you by the court."

 

"NO!"  Margaret says.  "You're making a big mistake!"  

 

"Let's go,"  Hannigan says, taking Matt by the arm.  

 

In the hallway outside, Luann, Ray, and Donna are waiting when the two detectives bring a handcuffed Matt out of the office.  "What's going on?"  Luann asks upon seeing her on in handcuffs.

 

"They're arresting Matt,"  Margaret replies in tears.  

 

"Arresting him?"  Donna asks.  

 

"What the hell for?"  Ray asks.

 

"Peter's murder,"  Margaret replies.  

 

"Oh my God,"  Luann says.

 

"Daddy, please, do something!"  Margaret begs.  

 

"Honey, don't you worry,"  Ray says.  "I'm gonna call Jay Smithfield and have him meet us at the station."

 

Margaret follows Matt and the detectives down the hall.  They get onto an elevator, Matt looking as if he is in a daze, unable to believe what's happening to him......

    Didn't Erin say she had relatives tested for a bone marrow transplant, including her parents? And now you have her mother just finding out?

    Doesn't Matt have an alibi for when Peter was killed?

    Wow how connected is Wendell to frame matt for Peter Stanton like I said brads the key to stopping Wendell and Craig Ewing he IMO has to forget this vendetta against the Ewings get some incriminating evidence against and wendell and Craig Ewing brad hates the Ewing but isn't a cold blooded murderer like Wendell and Craig Ewing he needs to get out from under this or he will be in serious strife

    First I want to say to John thanks for doing this episode and dedicating this episode to Parker Bena, I miss you my friend! Anyway yes Rose, you are correct. Lila your son is gay as hell! Get over it! Not accepting him for who he is means losing your son. At least Cass admitted he didn’t handle it well, you just flew off the deep end. You thinking more of how people you know will react instead of how your son feels. You thinking him being gay embarrasses you instead of how it makes him feel. Congratulations Lila your snobbish attitude has made you lose your son AND DAUGHTER! And it amazes me how much Jasmine and Lila are like so I guess Jasmine is right the Apple doesn’t fall from the tree. I mean Lila and Jasmine are very bold, very blunt, they don’t think with their heads, they think with their emotions. And yes I do believe Cass is right. I believe Lila was just the same way Jasmine was when she was 21 or 22. So yes I think it’s time for Jasmine to move out on her own.

    I like that Jeremy framed Matt for Peter's death because now the plan to bring Jeremy down once and for all could involve some unlikely characters that maybe we couldn't expect to be in involved.Also i keep wondering if we're heading for a murder mystery with Jeremy as the victim and most of the characters on Dallas could be suspects.

    Craig Smith and Jeremy Wendell really are the devil! One frames Matt Culver for Peter Stanton’s murder the other bails out Katherine Wentworth. Rose, no chance Matt Culver killed Peter Stanton. He has a rock solid alibi. I believe he was at the Krebbs house with his mother Luann, wife Margaret, and then John Ross came over to talk to him about Peter Stanton. Those guys must be desperate themselves to get what they want.

    Whoever kills Jeremy Wendell should get a medal! He’s a cold blooded killer. He’s killed or at least have arranged to have two people killed. One of them was innocent and had nothing to do with any of this. Heather Ewing didn’t deserve to die but I’m sure Wendell didn’t care. They were trying to kill Krystina and got Heather murdered instead. Then he arranges Peter Stanton to be killed too, and then he has help in Craig Ewing. Nobody on Dallas should spend one minute in jail for killing that heartless SOB.

    Yeah I think Jeremy Wendell has a lot of power and connections for him to do the stuff he did in this episode. Getting Katherine Wentworth out of jail like she wasn’t there in the first place. Then framing one of the most squeaky clean senators ever. Like cmon. Matt Culver has a rock solid alibi. This tandem of Katherine Wentworth, Jeremy Wendell, and Craig Smith is the most dangerous and powerful threat of common enemies the Ewings have ever faced.

    @DerekMatthews Yes we know Matt Culver has an alibi but the police may not just take his mom or wife's word that he was with them when Peter Stanton was killed since they're not exactly impartial.Also John Ross can claim he went to the Krebbs house to talk to Matt when Peter was murdered but can he prove it?Also depending on how long it takes to prove he didn't do it the scandal could hurt Matt in the long run politically or whatever.As for Wendell, i'm wondering if maybe he knows this could be his last battle with Ewings because of his age and so he may know he has to nothing to lose really in regards to what he does which could make him dangerous in that he may not care if he goes down in the end as long as he takes the Ewings with him.

    Dylan and Jasmine are nowhere near ready for marriage. Like they need counseling. I mean Lila was right before Dylan she was supposedly in love with his brother Connor. And now Jasmine is pregnant and I know Donna don’t like or trust Jasmine one bit. And she shouldn’t with all the stuff she pulled. Had Dylan in a hotel, she lied to the police about his whereabouts, she got her little brother involved; both of them were obstructing the police investigation. They luck they missed jail time. And then though Ashley was cheating on Dylan she used Dylan to set up the whole thing of him seeing it. So i understand why Donna has reservations about Jasmine. But they need lots of counseling before they get married.

    The police probably don't have a exact time of death of Peter staton so matt's alibi might not mean much if they don't know the time of death also remember justin did jail time when was framed for Tripp McKay's murder by Michelle Stevens and it was a similar situation Wendell is without doubt the most ruthless person in the history of dallas he makes JR look like a altar boy

    @DerekMatthews I also wouldn't be surprised if Katherine turns on Jeremy because she may know he'll turn on her and that he didn't get her out of prison out of the goodness of his heart.Plus as i wrote in another post above maybe Jeremy knows this is going to be his final battle with the Ewings one way or another and so maybe he wants to make sure all the pieces are in place first before he makes his final move against the Ewings and one of the pieces might be Katherine.

    A storyline you may want to include is where Sue Ellen's history of drinking catches up with her, and she is diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, which requires her to get a transplant. A middle aged or elderly woman approaches John Ross and Krystina and tells them she can get a liver, for a price. Krystle, who has for the time being recovered, sees this exchange, and it triggers a memory in her. There is a flashback to a scene from the OG Dynasty when Krystina was in need of a heart transplant. A woman approached Krystle (then a toddler) and said she can get her a heart, for a price. It turns out to be the same woman still running the same con.

    Andrew Hass, Do you really believe that Margaret or his mom would lie for Matt Culver? This guy is way too squeaky clean. He doesn’t have anything on his permanent record. Not even as much as a traffic ticket. And honestly do you think that Donna or Ray would do the same thing? No I don’t think so. And I bet John Ross can prove it. He has no room to lie for Matt Culver either because he’s a family man now. He does everything to protect his family now. Yes I know Craig Ewing and Jeremy Wendell are desperate people that’s why they are pulling out all the stops. Jeremy Wendell is absolutely older so this is definitely his last battle with the Ewings.

    @DerekMatthews Of course i don't believe that Margaret or Matt's mom or Donna or Ray would lie for him but the Dallas police might think they would lie for him.Plus if the police can't really pinpoint the time of the murder people saying Matt was with them at the time of the murder may not really matter.As for Wendell and Craig, maybe they won't really care if Matt goes down for the murder because Matt could be hurt politically just by been accused of murder which might be what they want.As for Wendell, if he knows this is his final battle with the Ewings that could make even more dangerous and he may have nothing to lose really and he may know if he pushes hard enough someone will kill him.

Bobby says, “voters are willing to overlook many thing, especially democratic voters”. I do not agree with that. But you should not criticize Republican voters either.
